They might want to save pace for the new ball, since they only have two in the team. Or, if they can keep the ball reversing, they just won't take the new one, but before long it'll start to die off the bat a lot. Tough call really.
If the ball starts to reverse then i can't see them going for the new ball as there is not much conventional swing on offer and scoring too has become harder for the Aussie batsmen as the ball got older and softer, so they might delay taking the new ball imo.

Good call, but they'll need to either take it first thing tomorrow morning or throw it to the spinners.

21 runs off the last ten overs, much more effective containment from Dhoni than Ponting managed.

With Gambhir gone from the next match, you'd think Badrinath would make his test debut and Rahul Dravid would open alongside Virender Sehwag.

I believe India can't change their squad for the last test. If they can, they'd probably draft Akash Chopra in. But I think Badrinath making his debut is more probable.

How gutted would Badri be if a batting slot opens up, him being the only specialist backup and they go and draft someone else in?

Absolutely. I'm a big Badrinath supporter as you probably know, so I would love it if he got his spot in the team.

I think either Australia needs to counter-attack this reversing swinging ball or keep rotating the strike regularly, because atm both batsmen are pretty much allowing the bowlers to bowl wherever they want and sooner or later that would just lead to them getting knocked over.

Mmm, sort of points out the ridiculousness of it all, which I pointed out in the previous test match.

Dhoni's got a leg-slip in for Sharma when Ponting is on strike - can anyone recall someone being caught there in the last 10-15 years?

Bit hard when barely anyone puts a fielder in there.
But if you think about the shots that go in that region, very few are catchable. The keeper has any slight deflection covered, while the fielder is blind to anything else because of the batsman's body. If you were going to put in three leg slips to cover the whole area - which is totally impractical - then you might have a chance at a wicket, but one man has virtually no chance.
