1st ODI (D/N) - South Africa v Kenya
OUTsurance Oval, Bloemfontein

November 2008
Sunday 2nd
2nd ODI - South Africa v Kenya
De Beers Diamond Oval, Kimberley

South African squad...

Graeme Smith (capt), Johan Botha (vice-capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Ryan McLaren, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Dale Steyn, Monde Zondeki.

Graeme Smith is likely to the miss the games due to tennis elbow. Likewise Hashim Amla is a doubt with an ankle injury which may need surgery. Johan Botha will captain the side in Smith's absence whilst Ryan McLaren's debut is subject to getting clearance from Kent.

The Proteas will meet up at a training camp in Kimberley on the 26th of October and additionally six players, Dillon du Preez, Dean Elgar, Johann Louw, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen and Lonwabo Tsotsobe will also be attending the camp.

Its a strange squad but I guess understandable.

Zondeki has also done his groin so his now also a doubt for the series and maybe Bangladesh depending on the extent of the injury. Parnell to come in! :)

Is that confimed then?

It would be a step in the right direction if Zondeki was withdrawn and a white player was called up, rather than having to match like for like.

No because Zondeki isn’t confirmed as being out but knowing Monde, a groin injury usually lasts for sometime.
Also Parnell is classed as ‘black’ (according to Norman Arendse).

Norman Arendse - "It would be irresponsible to push (Lonwabo) Tsotsobe or (Wayne) Parnell or any of the other players of colour at this stage."

Don't think Parnell's colour has ever been made an issue because he is so talented but he was actually playing for RSA U19's when he was just 16 and has been fast-tracked phenomenally quickly in South African terms. He only made his first class debut at franchise level last week...

Fair enough, but Im blacker

Also, disappointing then that this is the same old 'like for like' quota replacement

EDIT- Rereading the Arendse quote. It doesnt imply Parnell is of colour. I think it is just badly worded. Meaning no other player of colour or Player A or Player B.

Doesnt mean that Parnell is a player of colour.

Norman Arendse - "It would be irresponsible to push (Lonwabo) Tsotsobe or (Wayne) Parnell or any of the other players of colour at this stage."

That can read as
It is irresponsible for Tsotsobe to be picked
It is irresponsible for Parnell to be picked
It is also irresponsible to consider any of the other players of colour not in the squad.

Would be nice if Parnell was considered 'black' because he is too young to have been 'previously advantaged' so to speak.. Doubt that would happen though

McLaren is out so one of Dillon du Preez, Johann Louw or Wayne Parnell will/should get the gig instead. Hopefully it isn't journeyman Louw.

Bit of a nothing tour anyway isn't it - two ODIs? That's not even a series. A few games against the franchise sides might have been more beneficial.

Honestly I can only hope that somehow a few Kenyans get picked up by franchises
Franchises are being told not to sign Zimbabweans so I don't think they will go for Kenyans. Unless your top draw, most franchises and their supporters would rather see home grown players in action. Even some Dolphins fans are upset that the club signed Sanath Jayasuriya.

A provincial team then?

Just bumping this thread being as the ODI's are next week.

On another note I find it wierd none of the Associates have thought to play T20 cricket with anyone they have hosted r toured to. Kenya for example had a lot to gain from playing either Zimbabwe or Ireland in a one off T20 match when they were around.

There is not the same $ incentive for the Associates to host 20-20s. It would still cost Kenya more to host than they would make. Better at this stage of development to play as many ODIs as possible as it costs about the same to host, but you get more cricket.

But T20 is such an easier sell to the common man on the street. Its just bloody 3 hours and can be set up on as part of a weekend family event
