Ha, he's still vintage against the Aussies. And by wisely taking his worst year 2006, stats are twisted to make him look "past his best". For me stats are bull**** compared to how he looks while playing, and just yesterday he made a sweet 88 at a SR of 80. Now, how can a batsman past his peak bat at such a rate, without any element of slog, against the best side in the World?
See, this is what annoys me. Runs scored aren't "stats", they're the one thing that matters in cricket more than anything. Whichever team gets more of them wins the match. It's as simple as that. If you want a bat who looks good when playing then field Angelina Jolie in her underwear.

I'd say Warne and McGrath were still the best bowlers going around at the time. Lara had a mini-rejuvenation but I think it's fair to say he wasn't as good as he once was. Pollock was on decline. Warne was having his best ever period during his last few years.
Warne certainly wasn't at his best in the series against SA in 2005/06 nor The Ashes 2006/07, though clearly he was still pretty good. Pollock on the other hand performed far better in 2006/07 and 2007/08 than he had for many years.

McGrath in 2005/06 and 2006/07 wasn't significantly different to what he had been for most of his career, though.

I think you missed the point of cricket being a spectator sport.

Shouldn't come into it really, because how good a batsman looks when he plays is so subjective. Personally i prefer to watch Shiv Chanderpaul bat than Tendulkar, but i'm fully aware that it's just me.

Whatever it takes!!!
Unbelievable is his commitment!!! Lara definitely had inborn genius and talent more than Tendulkar. However Tendulkar is supreme when it comes to converting talent into substance.

And that 98 odd was off 75 balls, and he completely destoyed the famed trio of Wasim Waqar and Akthar in that match. BTW he "retired" many bowlers in that tournament, didnt he? Caddick comes into mind, esp how he was treated after his not so impressive comments before that match regarding Tendulkar.
I kinda have a bad feeling when you bring Lara and Sachin in the same post because at least this thread should and must stay as something about the great man and the great man alone... The comparisons and stuff has its own thread. :)

Yep. No doubt about how Sachin promised that he will never get out to Hogg again, and lived it in Australia.
myth...

I think it was to Monty Panesar that he wrote "Never again, mate"... And it is really sad that the so called "real fans" of Sachin have taken something which was said and meant as a joke so seriously.

And FTR, he DID get out to Monty again, in the same fashion too, I think...

I think it is inevitable that the current record holder is sompared to the previous one, and no point I intended it to bait replies. I love em both to bits, and really don't know how one can be better than the other.

If you measured a cricketer's quality by the number of books written about him then in absolute terms Sachin is third after Bradman and WG - although those two had starts of around 60 and 120 years respectively and never had the adulation of the printed word to the extent Sachin has during their playing careers

Haha, wow, is that your own cataloguing or have you seen this written somewhere?

Whoever it was that has dissimated this fact, it's a damn fine effort.

The greatest thing about him, for me, was that he refused to do a smoking and drinking ad at an age of 21 in 1995 when Wills and Directors Special were the sponsors..

The man does not have the greatest educational background, isn't exactly known for being all that "rounded" in terms of knowledge (he would struggle with his English at times, then and failed his grade 10 exams, I believe) but he still had enough sense to realize that he was a hero to millions and that they would copy him and refused something that is basically advocated by every other shameless star.... He is amazing and that is what sets him apart among sportsmen.

And the man has as much of a will as Sourav. He is well past his best but just watch how the odd bad comment really turns him on.

Lara mentioned about how he knew Sachin was going to have a great series once Buchanan made some tactless remarks about the detoriaration in his batting before the series down under last year...

Congrats, Champ.. You are one of the prides of INdia. :)

Might as well watch the green grass grow? But that's your preference and I hope you end up satisfied with that.

For me, the greatest thing about Tendulkar was he got runs and he got them beautifully. There are some who bat splendidly but not score runs, and there are Chanders. But this guy's been a mix of both.

That's wonderful. Sachin is awesome... no matter who you are, no matter where you live!

The game has a bibliography - it's a bit unwieldy and compromises 5 separate volumes and is the one cricket book that really ought to be turned into a regularly updated electronic work but for those saddoes amongst us who own the books and have enough fingers it's not a difficult or time consuming exercise
