As long as everyone in our group beats PNG then we'll make the semis regardless of other results, I think we're safe even with a loss against NZ or EnglandNormally I would love to see some upsets (Australia included) during the RL World Cup, but given I have ticket to the final, I'd love to see an Australia v N.Z. final.
Yeah, I quite like the tournament layout myself. It acknowledges the fact that international league isn't a clash of equals. It's really tough on PNG, but if they can't beat one of the Tri-nations they aren't going to win the cup anyway. As long as everyone in our group beats PNG then we'll make the semis regardless of other results, I think we're safe even with a loss against NZ or England
Agree with all that.Yeah, I quite like the tournament layout myself. It acknowledges the fact that international league isn't a clash of equals. It's really tough on PNG, but if they can't beat one of the Tri-nations they aren't going to win the cup anyway.
Samoa the other semi-finalist for my money, beating France in the play-off and England to beat NZ to play Oz in the final.
The trouble with league is that, after Oz, NZ & GB/England there's a pretty sizeable drop off in terms of quality. France are arguably the 4th strongest nation (them or PNG) and the last time we played them we put 50 points on them without really breaking a sweat. Oz v Fiji or England v Scotland is going to be a non-competitive turn-off for tv viewers and paying spectators alike. The draw as it is recognises a reality &, whilst it offers up PNG as the putative sacrificial lambs, they do get 3 tests against the 3 strongest teams and might even shock one of them. Their best chance is catching us cold (or rather sub-tropically hot) in Townsville.I don't like the format.
I don't think 3rd in the top division should be rewarded higher then the winners of the 2 other groups.
Would much prefer Group A - 1st and 2nd through to semi.
If Group B is deemed next highest, Team 2 [in Group B] to play Group A's 3rd place in a quarter final.
and then Group C's first place vs Group B's first place. or something along those lines.
Gidley'll probably be used as a utlility.Reckon it's gonna be Hunt by the sounds of it. Four fullbacks in the squad if this happens, what ****ing genius picked this team.

Gidley has never been anything more than an average first grader in every position he's played except fullback. As a number 1 he's world class but I don't think he offers anything else in other positions.Gidley'll probably be used as a utlility.
Dire picking, however.
