Can't off the top of my head think of anyone who was known as "Jah" other than in-part (eg Ja-Rule). That would be a strange one.

"Jay" just doesn't look right though as it's basically just an exact shortening of James and there's no y in James. Whenever I write down speaking to someone I know as "Ja" I write it "Ja".

On the other hand, one of the many wicketkeepers at our club is called Giles, and he's known universally as "G". IE, "Jee".

Im really suprised at Paul Horton being left out.
Have you seen him try to play one day cricket? It is painful and at 26 you wonder why he hasn't developed that side of his game especially as he plays out in Australia in the winter.

'And asked if he thinks his game is suited to the limited overs form of cricket, he said: "I have never been given the opportunity to play one-day cricket, so who knows? I don't know and I don't know if Lancashire know'.

It'd be a great shame if someone's inability to play one-day cricket impacted upon their chances of getting in the Test team.

After all this levity a grave and weighty matter has been brought to my attention

Between 1895 and 1909 the means of point scoring in the County Championship was one point counted for each win;one deducted for each loss;unfinished games ignored. Championship decided by the greatest proportionate number of points in finished games.

This is by far the best means of addressing matters as I am sure all CW members will agree

So I can hereby announce that under these proper rules Lancashire did not, in fact, flirt with relegation but did win the County Championship.

Congratulations to Mr Law, his happy band of team-mates (particularly the ultra-happy Mr Cork)and .as ever, the wonderful Old Trafford committee.

It was worth reading through all that jim nonsense for that tbh

Haha, Richard (or is that not appropriate? Maybe Rich, people aren't called Richard these days), seriously, you need to find something better to do with your life than discuss what name you believe Mr Troughton should accept. And use backward-slashes for no apparent reason. And know the real name of every CW poster. And make threads about Adam Shantry and James Tomlinson. It's pretty laughable and pathetic TBH, I'm posting less and less because I don't really wish to be associated with it, getting pretty embarrassing.

8-)

That honestly is very, very silly, IMO.

Trivialists really do annoy the heck out of me (what does anything matter at the end of the day? You might as well term every thread pointless. Heck, you might as well term life pointless and commit suicide)

FFS, what the hell does it matter whether one other poster uses backslashes or not? How the blazes does it matter to any third-party whether I know the name of lots of CWers or not?

And how the hell is the question of whether Shantry or Tomlinson is better irrelevant? It's a cricket forum for crying out loud.

If you'd prefer not to be associated with things like this then frankly it'd be best for everyone concerned if you weren't. How on Earth anyone can possibly be in the slightest bothered about any of it is beyond me.

And yes, Rich >>>>>>>>>>> Richard any day, BTW.

Why then does every cricket site of note list him as "Jamie"?

The most reliable of the lot - CricketArchive - has him as Jamie Oliver Troughton.
But he goes by Jim.

On the ever reliable cricketarchive (your words) this is the first line of his profile

"Jim Troughton is still waiting for his fame to overtake that of his grandfather, Patrick, who played Dr Who in the 1960’s."

and the player profile you link to is titled "Jim Troughton"

Hard to see your point here.

James Anderson is often titled on various pages and captions as "Jimmy Anderson" too... despite the fact he's stated more times than I can remember that he doesn't really like the name "Jimmy" at all and it's simply a name used on the field. Same way Anthony McGrath is called "Magga" and Geoff Boycott was called "Fiery". No-one uses those names elsewhere at all.

Troughton's name is Jamie. How on Earth anyone can suggest there's anything wrong with calling him Jamie is beyond me.

Then I won't be any longer... I loved CW because I could have discussions here about cricket that I could never have with people around me, but it's just become too much of a struggle to get through so much of the petty, idiosyncratic posting, which just blurs the (for the most part) sensible discussion. I have ignored for long enough, but there comes a point where it is time to call it a day.

Yeah and if you search cricinfo for Jamie Troughton his profile link doesnt appear. It is listed under Jim Troughton.

Note to self, what am I doing getting involved with this? :dontgetit I must have better things to do with my time

Ah one of my favourite threads has turned to mush as the season has ended. Maybe we can end it all here and start an offseason thread like the Aussies and Indians?:(

You really were one of the last I'd associate with toys-out-of-the-cot-ism. I truly am flabbergasted.

Yep, because he's called Jamie, not James.

It really is odd. If it was anyone but me I doubt anyone (especially Neil Pickup) would've said a thing.
