ICC Awards 2008

I dunno, in 2005 we had the joint player of the year, the ODI player of the year, the emerging player of the year, & Flintoff & Pietersen named in world XIs but we also took home the spirit of cricket award. I don't think it necessarily is a token award. I'm sure Ricky Ponting would have had some words to say about us taking the 05 award mind you - and I'm sure Burgey would as well :D
Probably related to Flintoff's immediate reaction to Kasprowicz's wicket.

Not sure how NZ get nominated for the spirit of cricket award either, the Murali run out and Vettori pavilion incident come to mind as reasons why they shouldn't be nominated.

Just how exactly is that incident relevant to the 2008 awards? It occurred in December 2006.

Utterly ridiculous that you are using that as a reason not to give it to New Zealand. Expected better from you, Gelman. A lot better. You're well out of the running for the Spirit of CW awards in my annual awards list soon to be released.

Haha, I knew if anyone would take offence it would be you :p

Seriously though, point is NZ/SL etc don't really play the game in a better or worse spirit then anyone else and there nothing wrong with that. Just a silly award.

Steyn's figures are absolutely astonishing.

89 wickets in 12 months at 18 each !! Thats stunning. Yet he has, while looking good, never looked THAT good. Must see him against Australia - even they are going downhill at present :(

Sign of the times - the nominations for the ICC awards ??

Well, skipping tours hardly helps your cause of getting a nomination. Probably the least Aussie-dominated list in years.

yes stats do not tell the whole story he got lots of wickets in south africa against
new zealand, west indies and struggled in india allthough he got 15 wickets 8 of them were
of tailenders, and bowled on both sides, even in england he was not that impressive.

also why is gambhir not there in odis he is the hgihest run scorer and laxman in tests

I thought he looked rather incredible tbh, except against England. The only reason i would think otherwise is that while he was performing so well, all i could hear was "ah, it won't last, he's unproven, it's just a short run of luck" etc. etc.

International Regular
Cricketer of the Year: Shivnarine Chanderpaul - Fairly comfortably, deserves it, top player.

Test Player of the Year: Shivnarine Chanderpaul - Once again, gun player, in both Tests and ODI's.

ODI Player of the Year: Mahendra Singh Dhoni - I was so unsure about this one, was so close between Bracken and Dhoni, went with Dhoni in the end because of the games he saved for India coming in after a few wickets have been lost.

Emerging Player of the Year: Ajantha Mendis - Obvious choice, but Sharma very close.

Twenty20 International Performance of the Year: Chris Gayle - Definitely Gayle, for his hard hitting.

Women's Player of the Year: Lisa Sthalekar, Charlotte Edwards, Claire Taylor, Nicola Browne - NFI, have not watched any womens Cricket this year.

Spirit of Cricket: Bangladesh - Taking their flogging against Australia so well.

That's mine, left 2 out, cause I couldn't decide.

I don't know why they can't just give an award for the T20 performer of the year, rather than just singling out a single T20 performance, but whatever the case surely its hard to see anybody else than Yuvraj getting the T20 award, he was just gun in the T20 WC.

I suspect Obanda gotnominated on potential, being as he's biggest contribution in the last calendar year was the one ***y 83 againts Canada in the Intercontinental Cup

Gayle has scored the only century though.

Yuvi does win 20-20. I think it's fair considering chance of what he did is not repeatable.

No suprises in case of other awards.

Upon looking at the stats, it's actually a fair call it seems.
Picking Sangakkara as the wicket-keeper is a bit strange considering he hasn't kept wicket in a Test for quite some time. Quite surprised there's no place for either Symonds or Hayden. One of those would have been in with a better than even chance, surely. I guess they were hampered by the lack of Test cricket in the judgement period and Haydos was injured for a large chunk too, I guess.

Anyway, as long as they go on with the business of winning Tests for Australia, I don't think they'll care too much.

All pretty sensible, though I am rather surprised that Gibbs was named in the ODI team of the year ahead of McCullum.
