It can be ... even worse in Wales though. Having to call off a trip to the cricket is nothing compared to what they're going through atm.

As for Shoaib, we should get him just in time for the final CC match of the season, by which time relegation will have been confirmed (and which will, of course, be rained off).
Have long thought that signing new players after August 1, especially from overseas, should be banned. Kinda like the transfer window in football.

If your overseas-player gets injured, tough. There isn't the money to be constantly flying in players for 3 or 4 games (or 1), even if it currently seems like there is.

I would have Clare and James Tomlinson on the A tour personally.
On the basis of one half-decent seasons (yes, no more than that - Tomlinson has had a couple of 10-fors and not that much besides and Clare has been even more up-and-down than the notorious up-and-down Graham Wagg) each?

Have to agree with that (about Shoaib I mean), especially as Nicko isn't even injured (just ineffective).

Finally underway again at Canterbury where Ramps is getting on with it but Murtagh still waiting to get off the mark after 30 deliveries. Must be the longest duck ever as Cricinfo have him down as having batted 349 minutes. :)

One of my favourite players. If Houghton was coach he would be still stuck in the second XI. Fleming was his 2nd wicket in first class cricket. He got his maiden century and took 7/74 in a game recently. :)
That is great to hear, his stats suggest a pretty decent pro start too. He is one particular player I hope stays injury free, not just because he has the capacity to be a complete all-round cricketer, but he is also a top man off the field

Clare I agree is more potential than results at present but worth a closer look I reckon, and Tomlinson is the equal leading wicket-taker in f-c matches this season. It's not often the holder of that position is English anyway (it's usually Mushtaq), so if that doesn't get any reward there has to be something wrong I think.

Tomlinson just has noone else to share the wickets with

I can't believe Surrey will still go through with the Shoaib deal for it makes no sense but neither did signing Chris Lewis or Alex Tudor...
I can't understand why Surrey care to bring a guy like Shoaib into their team, who more or less is likely to go down with an injury, after playing one or two games at the most.

Never keen on someone being given an A-tour on the basis of 1 season if they've been utterly rubbish beforehand (which Tomlinson has). And as I say - he may be the leading wicket-taker (or close to) but much of that is based-on 2 exceptional games. Deduct those and it's, what, 30-odd wickets in 10 or 11 games at 30s. Bowlers like Mark Davies, on the other hand, have taken less wickets (due to being inexplicably left-out while rubbish like Plunkett, Onions and Wiseman play) and fewer massive hauls but have actually put-in more good performances.

I am given to understand that Tomlinson's action is reminiscent of Kevin Emery - and remember what happened to him!

Hampshire seamer who took 83 wickets in his first season (1982) at around 23 - in his second season he played 5 games took 5 wickets and disappeared never to play a first class game again

Yes, an interesting story, Emery - he was helped considerably by having Malcolm Marshall at the other end (Maco took 134 wickets in 1982, a figure which hasn't been approached since - and surely the last ever instance of two bowlers from the same county claiming over 200 between them). Hardly explains his astonishing eclipse though. The Wisden report for 1983 mentions injuries without being more specific.

68% of the total at the point he was out - I understand all the arguments against him but no one will convince me he wouldn't improve the current England team - sadly though I am convinced now that I'll never find out

I was convinced when he took the best part of the summer to get from 99 to 100, I'm afraid.

Yeah. When the pressure is really on he seems to just lose his head a tad (THAT stumping springs to mind :@ ).

Its times like this id like to point out how Hick made his 99th and 100th in the same match  :flex:

Completely agree, actually. Even before the stupid transfer window came into football we had a transfer deadline at the end of March so that you couldn't bring someone in just for the run-in.

That old March deadline was the one I was referring to TBH. :p

That said it often did irritate me back in t'day, players moving so often mid-season, so I wasn't terribly sorry when the much-earlier deadline was introduced.
