As one old member is supposed to have said in the early days of one-day cricket, on seeing his team collapse in similar fashion, "looks like we'll have to play for a draw!"

Fortunately in JN Batty, we have just the man. :)

Frankly Surrey are so up themselves they deserve to get thrashed. Did anyone see the special Surrey issue of Spin magazine? "Behind the scenes at the biggest club in England"- they're not even the biggest club in London anymore.

Don't be angry - now's the time to celebrate a wonderful career, not wish it had been extended past its call of duty.

Evidently he just doesn't feel quite fit enough any more.
Im not angry, just so very very sad. I dont think any player was linked to a county as much as Hick was to Worcestershire in modern times. I also know we'll never replace him. Not to mention how this will pretty much destroy even the small hopes of any Twenty20 success in the future, while he obviously dropped off in averages in the 4 day and 1 day games his T20 form really did roll back the years.

Warwickshire begin their build up to didivision 1 next year signing ricki clarke
Hmmm. Hardly surprising that RC's move to Derbyshire "to restart my England career" & immediate appointment as skipper wasn't a huge hit in those parts. The lad isn't without talent, but there's not a lot between the ears by all accounts.

Looks like they have finally made a few changes to the Lancashire side. Loye, Keedy and Mahmood all dropped and Smith, Brown and Newby in to the side, probably too little to late. Cork and Chapple still opening and no wickets between them.

Middlesex, Surrey and Hampshire have apparently approched Mickey Arthur to become there coach for next season. Arthur from all reports fancies it for the money is likely to be two times what he earns from CSA and he doesn't have to work all year round.

If Arthur goes, Kepler Wessels, a man who Graeme Smith offered out only last year is the likely choice to take over as coach.

I'm presuming Newby tends to take far more second-team wickets than Hogg, else such continued preference seems inexplicable.

Hogg at least usually offers control; Newby rarely takes many wickets and sprays it more often than not.

Good to see Smith get a game mind, very good.

Changing counties twice in 2 seasons. Madness. Should never have left Surrey - did Butcher, Ward, Shahid, Stewart, Thorpe, Brown, Hollioake, Jonathan Batty, Newman and not-a-few others not have spells where they lost their first-team places?

And haven't Warwickshire got enough rubbish supposed seam-bowlers?

Newby would be a straight replacement for Mahmood who's apparently injured and not dropped, if Hogg were in his place there would be not one bowler who could get the ball much over 80mph.

Neither has taken many second xi wickets (Newby 11, Hogg 8, though they've only played 4 and 3 games respectively).

Godleman scores his 2nd FC ton. Seems a long time ago when many, including myself were proclaiming him as a future England player.

Nothing to worry about at the moment. Few players score heavily at such a young age.

On another note Worcs injury problems continue with the news that Kabir Ali is probably out for the season. Him and Jones were our main 2 destroyers for this season, thankfully we're far enough ahead for it to not really deny us promotion but its going to seriously hurt our chances of winning the division :@

We've also signed Fernando as cover which is some relief, although it means we've lost Arif as well now as we couldnt play both.

Sussex's bowlers have done a fine job of squishing Yorkshire today... At this rate we might stay up!

Just noticed JC being playing well for Derbys, in '06 i think it was he came and played a season of cricket in hamilton at the same club I play for, i even took the field a with him in a couple of games. Efforless player, watching him bat and bowl it just looks like it comes so naturally to him.

I'd have stuck with Arif myself. I'm surprised you think Fernando will provide relief - he'll probably just make it worse.

Unfortunate deeply for Worcs to lose first Jones, then Kabir Ali, then Mason, and now Arif. An attack which was until recently the best in the country now becomes (with Fernando, Whelan, Andrew and whoever-else) a standing joke.
