Virat Kohli gets a call up to the ODI side...what the?
There seems to be an anti Badrinath movement in Indian Cricket.
Absolutely stupid indeed. This selection is full of bloopers, and a couple of shockers.
They've chosen Virat Kohli, who's had success in the Emerging Players Tournament. Did India win the tournament? For those not following the series, they couldn't even make the finals. Then how do we know if he played for his Emerging team or a place in the National team? We've seen enough of this happening over the years, where players found wanting when they played for India played well for India A, but the A team lost, and when they made the national team, the team lost as well. Kohli, if you remember, played for the Royal Challengers in such a brattish manner, he squandered every good start he got and left the team in trouble so often.
Why Kohli, even Yuvraj shouldn't have been in the team. His fielding has declined, and he's getting out cheaply to part-time and unfancied spinners again. Equally baffling is the selection of Parthiv Patel. He's proven useless in the limited-overs game with the bat, and his wicketkeeping is not going to give Kumble or Harbhajan any confidence- like an India 'keeper should. There's something shady going on out there, so that more famous (and contracted) players get an extended run while outsiders are out after one series where they get no chance. Badrinath should have played in place of one of these.
It's good to see Irfan retained, though Yusuf would have been a better choice. In recent limited-overs cricket, the stock spinner has proved useful for many teams, so it will work for India as well. Moreover, with Irfan in such horrendous form with the ball and Praveen not finding his feet with the bat, they could use someone who's relatively fresh and new for the role of an all-rounder. These players may not look glamorous in action, but they do the job for their teams.
Munaf Patel in a one-day team? This is the worst yet. This is the late 2000's. You don't pick a medium-pacer who lacks fielding and batting ability as much as him.
