Where is Mark Butcher when you need him - or Laxman & Dravid for that matter
Even August 2001 was a bit of a maverick occasion - dead Test, declaration made only in an attempt to attain a whitewash (had it been, say, 2-0, then Gilchrist would have allowed the rain to make it a forlorn draw). England had nothing to lose, they might as well have gone for it.

And interesting - a bit (just a bit!) of turn, with bounce. And then Morkel gets Strauss.

Can any Englishman tell my why Vaughan is still in the team? He is a mediocre captain and over the last year a even worse batsman

This is Vaughan's worst summer with the bat since 2005. But his captaincy isn't poor by any stretch.

Why is he still in the team? Well, put simply, captains get more chances than non-captains do. Is it right? Debateable. Is it the way things are? You betcha.

Scores level. England are now 0 for 3.

Problem with Vaughan at the moment is that he's either awful or brilliant, and it's the former most of the time. He's done enough in the past and seems to be a well liked captain, thus England have stuck by him. Not sure if he'll last until next summer, although I hope he does.

Vaughans career could have been the subject of a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem.

When Bell plays good shots, there's no-one better.

Such a shame he plays so many bad ones in amongst them hence resulting in having less chance to play the good ones.

Why is it imperative that England score at 4 an over or to constantly attack?
I'm guessing it's a hangover from 04/05 when England played attacking, scored 400 in a day iagainst Australia. However that was on the back of a year or two of good fom, in complete contrast to the current side. England need to be disciplined here.

It was also the other way around from what people think - the bowling allowed the scoring-rate. It wasn't a case of the batsmen deciding to score quickly. South Africa's bowling is far too good for scoring-rates like that to be possible most of the time, so if you don't have the ability to score slower you're stuffed.

Even South Africa's attack of 2004/05 was pretty good, and England managed to get some runs there, though not as many as plenty of people were expecting pre-series. Only batsman who scored all that much was Strauss, with Trescothick mixing two massive innings in with lots of poor ones and Vaughan having his customary 1 good game per series with 4 poor ones.

On August 1, the sun comes out hopefully to stay for today.

Always like a sunny August. Hopefully we might get one.

Do you think it's that England pick players on how well they do in ODIs and Tests and not just Test level? If you look at the SA side, there's numerous players that are there because they are excellent Test match players and ok/terrible ODI players E.g. Amla, McKenzie, and Prince. Is that a concern?
