Lehmann out. Worst German keeper ever?
Comes to something when a we preferred a journeyman Spaniard who only came to England for a bit of extra work waiting tables* to him.

*this post is part of my EU "national stereotypes" quota for the 08/09 fiscal year.

Very jammy for Poles (Brazilians?) here. Never seen anyone miss so much as Austrian strikers these first twenty minutes.
Boruc has been in fine form, to be fair.

Sadly we have wee Gordon Strachan summerising at half-time, so doubtless he'll fail to pass up the opportunity to talk up his keeper.

EDIT: I was wrong; it's Martin "My Indecision is final" O'Neill joining Gaz & the two Alans today.

My boys didn't deserve that. If you waste so many chances and then play so dire in the second half, you don't deserve bailing out by the referee.

Extremely harsh penalty, but as Lawrenson pointed out what the defender was doing was stupid anyway, always running the risk of giving a penalty away for little reward.

Why exactly were Germany favourites for this (comp)? Aside from Michael Ballack they have precisely zero world class players and their defence Lahm aside is utterly laughable. Some idiot at the gym was raving to me about Germany’s win over Poland but little did he realise Poland are **** as well - illustrated by their performance tonight against the worst host nation of all-time, Austria.

Presumably that means he'll be going on about the long warm days, bright flowers, pretty butterflies and strawberries and cream. I can understand how that'd be annoying on a football program.

Christ, seeing Croatia doing well to date in this tournament with a team way off the individual quality of England (but with obviously stronger team spirit) to back by the performances of South Korea in WC 02, Germany 02 & 06 & even Scotland in the EURO qualifiers. Just shows how England have wasted our talent in recent times while teams less talented have stood up.

But i have a sneaky feeling under Capello a revival is near..

Well Croatia can actually pass the ball to each other, which on front at least means their individual quality is better.

They did tire quite badly in the last 20 minutes or so against Germany tho, which is a worry for later particularly when extra time might come into it. I'd love to see them get into the final and so Portugal and Germany would have been knocked out. Portugal are a flash side that offer little when they've not got some space to work with, Ronaldo crying is always amusing. Germany are very un-Germany like with their fragility at the back and lots of attacking options - I'm surprised they were such strong favourites. Still think Italy or France could bore their way to the cup assuming one of them makes it through.
