Dav seemed really keen on him judging by his posts earlier this thread. Not exactly out-and-out young though - he'll be 26 by the end of this season, can't remember if he's England-qualified yet or not.

Also in that game, Mohammad Yousuf finally strikes form. Obviously someone of his class was never likely to be kept down long, but it had to be against us he struck form didn't it? :@
He's been at Lancashire for more than 10 years...so yeah, i'd say he's England qualified.

Not really. No point damaging your chances for later in the season (Gough said a few days ago that he often struggles in the First-Class game these days) by trying hard when you don't need to in a game where the result is a foregone conclusion.

I'd much rather Gough save his efforts and be more likely to be able to put-in a telling performance later in the season in a crucial game.
What about his captaincy? Allowing Rashid to bowl nearly a thrid of the overs.

Can't see why he "needs" to play One Day cricket, itbt. First, Lancs won't pick him if he won't score runs; then there's the bit where I point out that playing limited overs cricket probably won't make him a better player in the longer form of the game, so why bother. Some people just aren't the limited overs type of player (see Vaughan, Michael), and it looks like Horton's one of them.
A few players have asked the selectors what they have to do to get into the England team and one thing they have been told is they have to be playing in both forms of the game for their county.

In that case the selectors are being pretty stupid, it's one of the few occasions i agree with Richard. Play people for the form they are good at, if they are good at both then fine but don't play people in both forms if they are crap at one and don't ignore a potentially good player because he's not great at FC or visa versa.

Can only presume Rashid was either a) looking dangerous or b) was less likely to waste energy. Remember, for the entire last day that game was basically unimportant, the result was a foregone-conclusion.

I dont see an issue. Thats one of the jobs of a spinner. No point a quick flogging themselves to death when a spinner can bowl with little effort.

Also a massive stint is good for his development. Could be a valuable experience for a developing bowler.

Three of the FP quarterfinals have started. Hoggard's playing for Yorkshire. Neither Sidebottom or Broad is playing for Notts, which must bless their members no end.

Durham not selected much in the way of bowling either, could be costly if Notts recover against our 4th+ bowlers.

Yep, he and Bresnan reducing Gloucs to 35 for 4.
Gough hasn't even bowled yet.

Shame we got them in the quarters, really - would've preferred to have faced 'em in the finals.

And I wonder - why on Earth have they (not for the first time this season) elected to bat opener Spearman at four and middle-order batsman Marshall (H) at the top? :laugh:8-)

Who are you missing today?
No Onions by the looks of things, though that would obviously increase Notts' chances.

Think whoever it was that ran Voges out has probably sealed Notts' fate mind. Can't imagine they'll escape from that. Very weak batting-line-up with Jefferson, Swann opening for some odd reason, Patel and Shafayat. Voges had to get lots for them to be in with a chance.

45 for 5 now, with Hoggard taking 3. Presumably Gough will allow Hoggard to bowl his full allocation straight through in his first game back. It's a very impressive spell to date, especially after hs first over went for 10.

How on earth did I forget Onions? But like you, I can't see Notts recovering from this.

Amazingly if Bresnan has a really good season then he could enter quite rare territory. He could finish the season in the 30 30 club for career FC performances.

Ie batting av over 30 and bowling av under 30.

Thats not bad going for a guy that looked weak early but really seems to be developing and will still be under 24 at the end of the season.

I must admit he'd slipped through my radar recently.
Have you seen much of him?

Not with the bat.

With the ball he always looked to have a really good action but didnt get enough out of it as he should.

The (admitadly) small amount Ive seen this season seems to indicate his bowling has got a greater edge to it than before.

What I wrote 2 years ago
Bresnan- From what little I have seen I have not immediate concerns technically (maybe with more viewing there will be some). He has a strong left arm, a braced left leg, left arm fires towards offstump in delivery and he transfers his weight well in his action. Tiny concern about his head but I will have to watch him more.
I dont think he is at the stage to be a specialist International bowler at the moment. However, if he takes his averages in the right direction then that is impressive and I think someone should be keeping an eye on him for future seasons. He certainly isnt close to being the finished product but he is going in the right direction and that is all you can really ask for.
