Do we have a quiz thread in here?
Is there enough traffic in here to sustain one?

I dont know. Anyway, tough answers that require thought and need questions and clues.

Ill give it a go first.

Which teenage phenom had his career destroyed by injury before reaching 18 yet it may have saved his life?

Vaguely remember Kanu having an op for an undetected heart condition whilst he was at Ajax, but think he was older than 18 &, obviously, it didn't destroy his career.

This was mentioned on TV by a commentator or a panelist or something the other day, though infuriatingly I can't for the life of me recall who it was...

Have absolutely no idea, but will take a stab and say Gascoigne?

EDIT: Haha, misread that question (didn't see the "career destroyed" bit). Disregard the above.

Its a tough question. Though the guy is very famous he isnt close to as famous as he should be.

He was dubbed the "English Pele"

Black, then?
Actually, no. Though another clue could be that he was very close friends with one of the early black players in English football and during his injury he was in showbiz with them. However, I dont think that will help many people.

Long shot, Wilf McGuinness? Dunno about teenage star, but bad leg break ended his career (left him needing 2 crutches to walk in later life, remember him leading a utd youth side against Trafford about 10 years ago). Ended his career, but kept him off the plane to Belgrade that didnt make it back from Munich.

This may even further murky the water. The name is wrong but the reason for avoiding potential death is correct. Ie avoided the air disaster

Yeah, got to say awful question. How can you dub a player the English Pele before February 1958? Nobody knew Pele till he hit the scene at that summers World Cup. The attributed quote saying it doesnt add up, the person alleged to have said it wasnt the type of person to band about such comments (bearing in mind the talents he saw come through the ranks, he knew a fair good player or two). Would like to see where the quotes came from tbh :)

Here is a small selection

"The English Pelé"- Manchester United Assistant Manager Jimmy Murphy
"His play bears the stamp of genius"- Stan Matthews
"He is by far the best youngster I have ever seen"- Jackie Milburn

and Busby is reputed to have said that if this player had not got injured then Bobby Charlton would never have played for Manchester United.

Yeah, i've read those quotes, only because i hunted it out. None of them are attributed to my liking though. Having read many a book about Man Utd, its history, the players (and the almost players), a fair few specialising on the Busby era, esp. the 1958 team, the first time i heard this persons name is when i looked it up today. Theres a wiki page with said quotes on it, which is listed as dubious infomation, and offers no source.

Not disputing the players skill, just the quotes seem out of character for the people speaking them, and indeed out of time for me (why talk about the English Pele your watching in 1956/1957?)

Given Pele was unknow til the 58 WC I'd imagine yer man was speaking after the event.

Anyway, Barry Fry? Know he was a minor Busby Babe who never quite made it, but the idea of him as The English Pele makes me feel nauseous.
