Well he is 38 and was out of contract, the best he would've got was a one year deal - we have Schofield remember, and Murtaza plays in the Surrey league so he can be called up whenever necessary. But Saqi is the first choice obviously, plus Afzaal's been bowling quite a bit.

Salisbury >>>>> Schofield and always has been.

Not sure at all about this Murtaza Hussain fellow, but he's a fingerspinner (and a stock-standard, rather than Saqlain-style, one at that) isn't he?

Afzaal's no use as a bowler, barely above net-bowler standard really.

Most England rejects doing well at the moment - not Ramprakash though. Absolutely set up to bat for a long time but couldn't manage it. And Surrey will go into T20 without a Championship win (even if rain comes to the rescue tomorrow).
It was a quite extraordinary innings from Ramps yesterday. As you said, it was set up for him to bat for as long as he wanted, but he was all over the place. If you're being generous, you'd describe the innings as frenetic. He could have been caught twice when mis-hit swipes just evaded fielders and eventually fell edging a massively wide deleivery. Those of us who wondered how the Ramps temprament would handle the pressure of being on 99 tons are nodding sagely. Based on what we saw yesterday, you wouldn't bet on him reahing his 100th before Surrey play a couple fo the universities at the start of next season.

Ramps aside, Surrey were horrible yesterday, and don't deserve to be saved by the rain today. Newman was badly missed by Tres whilst in single figures and could have gone on numerous occasions, but eventually gave it away just short of his 100. Butcher was run out by his runner - the poor lad who is on debut. Benning was bowled by one that he left - this was when Willoughby was bowling his slow stuff because of the light.

If he lasts this summer, I'll honestly be very surprised to see him not picked for wherever it is we're heading first this winter.

Just maybe those who wondered about him getting a Test recall because of the fact it was possible nothing would have changed had a point.

Maybe before then if SA spend a couple of tests flaying Anderson & Broad to all parts of Lord's & Headingley.

Tredwell getting tonked by Chris Tremlett, meaning that Hampshire get a batting point they really shouldn't have managed :@

I'm beginning to see that Tredwell really is pretty useless.

Shame that Tremlett couldn't manage rather more when he had the ball in his hand.

Has Minal Manesh Patel retired? If not then seems odd that Tredwell is playing ahead of him.

Damn, shame if the body wasn't standing-up to it any more.

Well, Tom, think on - at least Tredwell can't be worse than Robert Ferley.

Bopara continues his good run-scoring this season, even though Essex went down. Really hoping RTD can pick up his batting and start making some consistent runs.

Young Paul Horton over at Lancashire played a pretty good knock too, he's had a good start to his First Class career. Keep on eye on him. I'm sure steds or skd could tell us more.

Dav seemed really keen on him judging by his posts earlier this thread. Not exactly out-and-out young though - he'll be 26 by the end of this season, can't remember if he's England-qualified yet or not.

Also in that game, Mohammad Yousuf finally strikes form. Obviously someone of his class was never likely to be kept down long, but it had to be against us he struck form didn't it? :@

Hampshire going down :(
They might still manage to bat out two sessions, and certainly the weather is looking poor around here so it might spread eastwards before long.

But your batting is pretty weak this year, and with neither Carberry nor Crawley striking particularly great form, you're handicapped.

Middlesex-Derbyshire might be a very interesting chase if the rain doesn't intervene.

Fair point. At least Tredwell can bat a bit.

Patel was a really good player IMO, thought he was unfortunate not to play more for England.

Looks like Hampshire are going to get away with a rain-affected draw. Bit of a shame considering it's the first time both our batting and bowling have clicked at the same time in the Championship this season but lots of positives to take out of the game, not least a successful return for Amjad.
