France's Euro 2008 squad:

France squad:

Goalkeepers: Coupet (Lyon), Frey (Fiorentina), Mandanda (Marseille)
Defenders: Abidal (Barcelona), Boumsong (Lyon), Clerc (Lyon), Evra (Manchester United), Gallas (Arsenal), Sagnol (Bayern Munich), Squillaci (Lyon), Thuram (Barcelona)
Midfielders: L Diarra (Portsmouth), Makelele (Chelsea), Malouda (Chelsea), Nasri (Marseille), Ribery (Bayern Munich), Toulalan (Lyon), Vieira (Inter)
Strikers: Anelka (Chelsea), Benzema (Lyon), Gomis (Saint-Etienne), Henry (Barcelona), Govou (Lyon)

No Mexes or Flamini? ITSTL. As for Trezeguet for not being picked we all knew that was going to happen.
Problem with France’s squad is that they have some really good/great players but that was some years ago. Thuram’s selection in particular is baffling for he has been lousy for sometime, his legs have gone. Also Boumsong, Domenech's taking the piss.

I'd also suggest that Sagnol is past his best, and the inlusion of Diarra ahead of Flamini is also questionable. The inclusion of Makelele at all is also somewhat dubious.

Same thing was said before the 2006 WC, but those old players rose to the occassion so i won't coubt them out just yet.

Easy to criticise the eccentric Domenech but he's quite a shrewd customer and he tends to pick those players who play well for France and not just for their clubs.

Boumson, btw has actually had a pretty good season for Lyon.....

Fabio Cannavaro to miss Euro 2008 through injury.

Not as bigger blow as the media will no doubt hype it up to be imo, hopefully they will play Barzagli and Nesta together rather than again revert to using Marco "the matrix" Materazzi.

We're having a £5 buy-in sweepstake for the championships. It was drawn on Sunday evening. I have Austria. What a waste of money! I mean ordinarily you'd think the home nation, even if it was quite weak, had some kind of chance- I need more than a miracle, I need a plague to strike all the opposition squads.

Eh, Nesta retired last year. Would be very surprised if it wasn't Barzagli and Materazzi now.

oh...he did? :( a shame

but in that case Barzagli has to play, he is the best Centre Back available to Italy now.

Although i haven't watched much of Serie A this year thats a big call for Barzagli. Surely its got to be Materazzi ATM or even Chellini based on the fact media was saying he was the best defender in Italy this year.

As a centre back!?

Barzagli has been putting in decent displays for Palermo for years, imo he fully warrants being put straight into the side.

It's going to be interesting to watch Barzagli play for Wolfsburg next season. A move to Bayern Munich or at worst either Schalke or Werder Breman would make more sense then to go to Wolfsburg on the basis they were offering double the money then Fiorentina (and he is a local as well since he is from a town just outside Firenze/Florence).
