Stu Bailey's done the same...in fact he's anchored Sovereignty too.

Fantastic day at ancient Avondale today. Juice and Crossthestart are two hugely promising horses and their performances this afternoon were absolutely awesome. Looking forward to seeing Juice in the spring 3yo fillies races.

Crossthestart is Brisbane-bound apparently. Should be very competitive over there.

Right, to see how clever I am, I'm going to put on an imaginary Pick Six on here (winners of the last six races) for tonight's Auckland meeting at Alexandra Park (which I'll be attending, and may even put the bet on myself).

Anchoring Antares could cost me, but it'll remain to be seen.
10.00 Pick 6 Percentage Bet 48 combinations - minimum 40.00%
Leg 1 6. Sovereignty - first!
11. Doctor Mickey
Leg 2 4. Antares - first!
Leg 3 1. Gotta Go Cullen
9. Changeover - first
Leg 4 8. Goldie Blue
9. Absolute Magic - first
Leg 5 2. Playmate Of The Year
3. Pasi
14. Fayanni - fifth (best of my chances)
Leg 6 1. Alta Casanova
3. Jonny English second
So, kinda close.

TOTAL COST NZ$10.00

A mare called Katy Keen just won the G2 Travis Stakes, her 6th consecutive win. Pretty amazing really, she hadn't shown much prior to this season to suggest she was anything above average.

Now she's almost certainly the best staying mare in the country.

Even better, winning trainer Murray Baker says the NZ Derby winner (Nom du Jeu was 4th in that race) would have distanced them in this race had he run.

Kevin Myers really is an idiot.

Auckland Reactor ran his last 400m in 25.9 at Ascot Park yesterday. If he wasn't so brilliant, I'd suggest that time was wrong. But he is.

Although I said in the other thread that horses aren't machines...that one's pretty close.

As I mentioned in the made/ruined day thread, the Kentucky Derby is this weekend. The best race in the world IMO.

Unfortunately it looks like a rather dire crop of three year-olds over there this year though.

The horse considered by most to be the only possible superstar in the field is Big Brown, who has won his only 3 starts, by the combined margin of just under 30 lengths. Can't do much better than that. However, he's drawn 20. Ouch.

I reckon Denis Of Cork is a very strong chance. Had excuses when he had his only taste of defeat last start and has apparently been working sensationally since he arrived at Churchill Downs.

Despite the fact that I dispute the importance of betting in racing, if on our tote Denis is anywhere near the 20-1 he's quoted at in the US I'll be very tempted.

And I want to show my support to the TAB for bringing us the race this year (would be tragic if this amazing race had less betting than the abysmal Australian greyhound races they chuck in at any opportunity...not that my little bets would make any difference, but it's nice to feel that I'm doing my bit), so I might put on some multiples as well. Maybe Denis with Court Vision, Pyro, Colonel John, Big Brown and one of Gayego/Adriano/Monba in a percentage tri.

Oh my oh my. This is funnier and has had me in more stitches than anything I've ever read on here. You will never know how funny this is.

And just for clarity's sake - I am not being sarcastic.

Wasn't my intention to be funny, but I'm perfectly happy to take the credit for it.

The ad I played on Radio Trackside last night contained the phrase "betting opens Saturday".

For now, yes. Very keen on leaving, but the fact that there are only 2 other people doing the job I do makes that impossible at present.

What an extraordinary Kentucky Derby.

Big Brown jumps only averagely from the outside gate, gets stuck 4 wide around the first turn and stays there all the way down the back (unbelievably bad ride), then makes his move around the last turn and ****s off to win by 5 lengths. I can't believe it.

Tragically the filly Eight Belles who ran such a brave race for second suffered a fatal injury just after the post. :( Why do I love the sport and hate it so much at the same time?

Must have a look at this. Sounds like a cracker. (was working)
Always sad news to hear of such injuries in the racing world.

Wretched electioneering from Winston here:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4550801a17395.html

Were the tax cuts for the racing industry last year not enough? Taxpayers to fund stakes money to the tune of $9m? Don't the industry bigwigs make enough money as it is? Extremely crass timing given the inability of some families in NZ to afford to pay their food bills. Cullen to resist tax cuts for all, but Winston can give money to the horseracing glitterati?

And some people call the labour party 'socialist'.

I disagree. As a selfish racing fan, I think it's fantastic. But even attempting to look at it more objectively I don't think it's bad. The racing industry employs thousands of people, I don't think many of whom would identify themselves as 'glitterati', who are up some time before sunrise every morning and work their arses off. Many of them are struggling a bit, and while I don't expect this to directly help them much I'm hoping the boost to the industry that will come from a couple more big $1 million races (like possible Australian interest, particularly if the races are near an international airport instead of a 6 hour drive away...sorry Hawke's Bay - you're doing an awesome job but this is your problem) will flow down to them in the long run.

The increase in prize money is certainly beneficial to the industry, with dozens of horses who would in the past have been sold overseas staying here for their racing careers. When horses with stallion potential do well here or in Australia (as Nom du Jeu has and hopefully Alamosa will), I hope breeders will come from far and wide with their mares to seek the stallions'....ahem....services.

Lastly, giving money to the racing industry is by no means throwing it down a drain. The industry can be highly beneficial to the economy - look at the Karaka National Yearling Sales. Quite a bit of money there.

And if we boost up some of the big 'carnivals', it can only be a good thing for the economy. Look at the Melbourne Spring Carnival - millions of dollars' worth of tourism. Far-fetched to think we can match that, but it's a nice example of what can be possible with this sport. Christchurch is doing alright with its Cup week too.

I find the vast majority of his policies abhorrent but I have to concede that Winston's been the best racing minister ever. So I guess I'll always have to respect him for that, as hard as it may be.

As for it being electioneering...meh. The election campaign lasts 3 years now anyway.
