The Perdurable Mr Tendulkar

I was just hinking that an English ever-present would do 50 Tests in about four and a half years, I guess we play more Tests than most though
Yea, if Tendulkar was English and had played from 1989 until now, I think he would have 200 Tests.

Edit: Just checked - they've played 219 Tests from 1989 to now. Assuming he wasn't fit for about 20-30 of them, he'd be very close to 200 or just reached it.

We've played 219 in that time, not sure how many he'd have missed through injury

It really is crazy to think that he debuted when England still had Gooch, Gatting, Gower etc playing. It's like 2 eras ago man, at least

You could probably say 185 as a conservative estimate. India have played 165 matches and Sachin has played 147 of them. So you figure about 185 is about right. He'd also have played less ODIs, so it might be better for him overall in terms of rest, but would probably even out as he'd be playing more county cricket due to the lack of central contracts in England until recently.

Yea, Malcolm Marshall, Ian Botham, Imran Khan, etc, were all playing at the time. Hell, he missed Sunil Gavaskar by only two years.....

There is one hell of a lot that has changed since 1990. Yet it really doesn't seem like that long ago.

You and ss are both a year older than me too.

Seems a long time to me

In 1990 I was 6, couldn't ride a bike, mum and dad were still married, didn't know how babies were made, I'd never heard of John Aldridge and nobody had heard of Andrew Flintoff.

Now I'm approaching 24, can't drive, Mum and Dad are married but not to each other, I know all too well how babies are made, and I toy between Aldo and Flintoff for who I would most like to have a pint with.

Life has changed a lot :)

Apart from moving around the country, learning to drive, getting a job, and finishing school\college (all of which seem incidental) virtually nothing has changed for me.

Actually, thinking about it, from the school\college POV, I'm more similar to 1990 now and from 2005 onwards than I was at any point 1991-2004.

That's what they said about 300 Test wickets. :p

I could quite easily see an Australian or Englishman managing it.
They said it about a great many things, some of which have been surpassed, some of which have not.

We'll only tell when we tell, obviously - but 300 wickets was never something beyond the bounds of realism. I don't think anyone in 1964 thought the notion of playing 100-120 Tests was impossible, just that there'd never be a day when it happened.

To play 200 Tests, you'd have to be one remarkable physical specimin. Most would collapse long before then, and the few who wouldn't would probably be nowhere near good enough. Even those tiny number would need a following wind.

So really, I don't see it. I hope soon that the number of Tests might be slightly reduced, not increased.

2111 WC! What an occassion that will be! Although I suspect it will be mostly a 10-10 WWc or a 5-5 WC.

as for the 2011 WC, Sachin will be 38, and 38 is not that old for one to play his last WC.

Well... yeah, it is really TBH. I can't off the top of my head think of anyone that old (from a serious cricketing country) who's played in a World Cup, though there may of course be some.

Only the very best batsmen (like Tendulkar) would be likely to be able to do it.

I can only think of two who were close - both Wasim (2003) and Inzi (2007) were 37.

And both of they were clearly nowhere near the bowler and batsman they had once been, though fair to say of course that Wasim wasn't too bad.

As an aside - I don't know if the age of either player is known for certain.
