Where do these teams go from here?

Kolkata- McCullum has propelled them to near-instant victory, but what if he doesn't fire? None of the other batsmen, bar Ponting, had a good match. The bowling looked better than otherwise due to a misfiring Bangalore batting side. They need to support Ishant rather than try to be stars. LR Shukla is a dangerman from this team.

Bangalore- Their bowling misfired and put before their slow-scoring batsmen an impossible target. Too many loose balls on either side of the wicket. Their fielders need to support the bowlers more. As for the batting, they need to stretch their reserves to get a better performance, because their less-fancied players may do a lot better than the tried and Test-ed.

Chennai- Hussey's the man! What if he's on a holiday? They won't get a total of 240 that their weak bowling can defend successfully. Their bowling looked weak, and that total of 240 could have been chased down- just that it was huge. The batting, bar keepers, was not too bad. Patel opening ahead of Dhoni was a strange one, but batting was impressive- even beyond Hussey. They need to hold on to their catches, tough as they may be. The more fancied Sudeep Tyagi would be a better choice than local Amarnath, while Joginder's run-scoring ability will also come useful. To sum it up, change the batting order, change the bowling lineup, hold on to catches and get more out of Joginder Sharma.

Punjab's Silver Kings- Their bowling needs to tighten up. Maybe Irfan can open with Lee and Sreesanth can come as a change bowler. They can rotate their wicketkeepers Sanga and Dharmani, to avoid any fatigue out there. Hopes and Chawla need to tighten up, while Karan Goel should never get another over to bowl- he should stick to batting. As for batting, they tried really hard, but 240 was a mammoth target and Katich ahead of Irfan was a misfit. For the next match, they can rearrange the bowling order, stick to their main bowlers and open the innings with Hopes and Irfan.

Rajasthan Royals- They have a Mallya brand on their backs, but let's hope they don't end up like the Mallya team. This is a good team when put together, but they looked totally unprepared, and didn't really have a plan. Indecision between wickets, running risks between wickets, as also some rash shots onto the stumps (and one bad decision by an umpire) didn't help at all. They missed Graeme Smith and Morne Morkel, and it showed. Langer may get a game next. They need to build up on their largely effective fielding, but laggards like Munaf Patel need to be shown the door to the fitness centre. And of course, try to get wickets!

Delhi Daredevils- Buoyed by batting of Sehwag and Gambhir, they can drop one batsman for an extra bowler. That would have to be Rajat '100k' Bhatia, who will get targeted by batting sides which are more stable. Sangwan may come in, and of course, Their electric fielding was remarkable, and a stronger bowling unit would make them virtually unstoppable. They need to stretch the batting ability of Vettori and Maharoof, while replacing 'Bang' with Amit Mishra is not a bad idea either. They can afford to go without an overseas player!

you can think what you want .... and pace means little without line and length, *cough Tait*
I highly rate Tait's T20 potential

and him being unfit and what BCCI has to do are different issues .... if you are saying that he is not a good bowler because he bowls within himself then thats not a valid point .... you don't become a bad bowler by bowling within yourself or a bad batsman by playing within yourself
The BCCI can send him to the NCA for a training routine. Bowling permanently within yourself makes you a bad bowler if you are a fast bowler.

how other bowlers have bowled tells you something abt the trend /surfaces offered in a tournament, doesn't it?
Only if you judge a player on his statistics.

Again you can think what you want, it doesn't mean anything .... Just like you rate Tait's potential highly, I rate Munaf's

Nah, it doesn't .... McGrath gives me an impression that he is usually bowling within himself and he is a terrific bowler

Aren't you the one who usually posts stats? .... and I m not even talking stats

Too many posts to go through and see if mentioned already. Did Royals go into this game with only 3 overseas players? If so why?

They were missing their more prominent players, notably Graeme Smith and Morne Morkel. Langer wasn't really a fit here according to management (though he wil lbe in some time), and even Dimi was in action elsewhere. Luke P is an unknown name.

Misuse of potential for me. If Tait were to play in the IPL now, I'd think he'd bowl well. Munaf will not have a good tournament unless he ups the pace.

Munaf suffers from this same belief. Mcgrath bowled 85mph when he could bowl 90mph, he now bowls 75mph where he can bowl 80mph - Munaf bowls at 75mph where he can bowl at 85mph.

Aren't you the one who usually posts stats? .... and I m not even talking stats
I saw the bowler bowl and don't rate him - what does the pitch have to do with that?

as someone said, If 'IFs' and 'BUTs' were pots and pans then there would be no tinkers .... And most bowlers will have a rough tourney, if the pitches stay like this

So? .... it means nothing except you thinking it means something

a pitch tells you how a bowler should be bowling on it and what a good bowling performance is duh .... I think that Trivadi is promising

Name 1 [other] good, fully fit, bowler who bowls 10mph under what would they have bowled in past series.

Dude, don't you get it that the point that you are making means nothing to me

and why 10 mph then, why not 7.43 mph? .... next, someone else would come up with crap like xyz is not a good bowler coz he bowls at 8.76 mph lower than what he could bowl, so would it mean anything?

Arjun, don't you think you're being a bit over-analytical here? This is a long campaign and it may take a good four or five games for the teams to settle a bit. IMO very little in what you can analyse has changed since on Thursday. And it's Twenty20 - pretty much anything can happen, only in the long-term will the real star players and talents emerge.

Gayle no-show
Chris Gayle will miss the Kolkata Knightriders' first home game, against the Deccan Chargers this Sunday. He did not leave for India on Friday as he was scheduled to, owing to a groin injury, and is expected to be out of action for a fortnight, according to the team spokesman. Though he will miss the first few games, Gayle is expected stay on, along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, till the end of the tournament despite Australia's tour of West Indies clashing with the IPL.

Ranji Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians have recruited several former Ranji players as support staff for the team. While former Test wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe is their fielding coach, Mumbai batsman Atul Bedade is the travel manager and former Indian left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi is their team manager. Apart from them, Subroto Banerjee, a medium-pacer who played one Test for India before moving to New South Wales, has been called in as Mumbai's bowling coach. Banerjee is a Level II coach and plays grade cricket in Sydney.

Bravo in for Malinga
Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies allrounder, will be joining the Mumbai Indians squad to replace the injured Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga. Lalchand Rajput, Mumbai's coach, confirmed that Bravo was the unanimous choice of the "few" names discussed by the team think-tank. Malinga, recovering from a knee injury that he picked during the CB Series in Australia, and, had to miss the Caribbean tour but was confident last week he would be fit to join the Mumbai squad. But Rajput said "we got a report that his recovery might take a further two to three weeks. So we decided to have a back-up".
Bravo comes in for Malinga for Mumbai .... Bravo will be the 3rd over-seas all-rounder, the other two being Pollock and Jayasuriya .... Ronchi can be termed as a Wkkkeping all-rounder too .... Mumbai is packed with a lot of multi-talented players

Morne Mørkel is unavailable this year due to county cricket commitments. Same goes for Langer, who's fit incidentally. Younis Khan, Sohail Tanvir and Karman Akmal were also representing Pakistan.

Presumably Luke P is Luke Pomersbach and his signed for Punjab not Jaipur.

Thats not going to be necessary. International match schedules mean that not all International players will be available. In the first match alone Chris Gayle, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, Salman Butt and Misbah-ul-Haq were not able to play.
Yea but with this tournament with the rate its going at likely to really take off worldwide i reckon the ICC will be forced to fitting the IPL into the Internatinal calendar for a while yet, thus more international players will be available, theirfore restricting the sides to just 4 international sides wouldn't be need.

Then the IPL will be off the hook..
