***Official*** New Zealand Domestic Season 2007/08

Well for starters, Bennett's first class and OD records don't make good reading. I've heard alot about him but he's only shown glimpses of his talent. Then again, the NZ selectors have picked players on talent and not form before and they've sometimes come off.

I like the look of Burtt, he gets in close to the wicket and he's quite aggressive. He's only just putting consistent performances in now because of injuries over the last 2 or 3 years so he might need another season or two in domestic cricket, but I think he's showing some positive signs.

Trent Boult is very quick but I think it would be too risky for NZ to try him out along with Southee. Boult hasn't even played first class cricket yet.

I'd be looking at taking Southee and maybe Burtt or Bennett to England and playing them in all the practice games and maybe one or two of the ODI's.

These are the guys I reckon the selectors are looking very closely at right now with retirements and tours coming up.

Rob Nicol, Greg Hay, Neil Broom, Greg Todd, Richard Sherlock, Bradley Scott, Grant Elliott, Daniel Flynn, Hamish Bennett, Leighton Burtt, Peter McGlashan.

I wouldn't be surprised if 2 or 3 of these players made the cut for the England tour.
Nicol-Fair call, has the potential to have a good career.

Hay-should be on the plane to England IMO

Broom-same as Nicol

Todd-one good game shouldn't get you selected, he should be down the pecking order

Sherlock-nah, just coming back from injury, hasn't been setting the world on fire.

Scott-maybe, a bit on the slow side but has good swing and accuracy IIRC.

Flynn-too early, has the goods though

Bennett-same as Todd

Burtt-erm, who is this bloke?

McGlashan-NO NO NO NO NO

Well..if you can name a better list of players..go for it. Sherlock of course won't go to England, but you can bet your a** the selectors are watching his return form like a hawk.

Wasn't trying to criticize, sorry if it sounded that way. Just posted my opinions on the players.

Certainly they'll be watching Sherlock, he'd be alot of fun to add to our seam amoury that is developing nicely.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Nicol and Broom should be the only batsmen in contention. They've had a few seasons, seem like good talents and have good enough stats to back them up. Would like Hay to play another domestic season before being picked.

Redmond is another name if Cumming fails, but it looks as though they'll go back to How and Papps before giving hima shot.

Went down to the basin for the first half of the game yesterday before getting dragged away by what was going in Napier. Glad to get one last look at Bond before he heads off to the Incontinent Codgers League, but it really looked like he was bowling well within himself, and his figures reflected how poorly he bowled. Fleming batted nicely, and its a pity Wellington had to lose, as he and Bell could've done with a bit more match practice before the test series. It was also the first look I got at Canterbuy's young seamers. Leighton Burtt has a very strange delivery leap that takes virtually all the pace out of his run up, though he still manages to get it through at a good clip. Bennett has an unusual knees-to-his-chest running style, and an action that's half Courtney Walsh, half Lance Cairns, but he was bowling faster than Bond (probably 140-145, though I really couldn't tell for certain), and was unlucky to pick up only two wickets. Also good to see Harry again, still quick as lightning in the outfield, with a brilliant side-on run out, and still as breathtakingly slow with the ball.

Boult and southee continue to impress in the world cup. Boult picked up 7, and Southee 3. Add these 2 to the bennets and sherlocks, and theres hope yet for the future.

Definitely. Prepare the pitches green and let that lot loose would be fun.

Also, how come some players in your sig have asterics and some don't?

My club (West of Scotland) have just announced that Grant Robinson of Northern Districts will be our pro this year. His cricinfo stats don't look too flash but was apparantly coming on the back of a good season.

Anyone seen him play, thoughts?

Yeah I don't think Robinson will feature for New Zealand. Scores heavily at club level, but seems to be in and out of the Northern side on a regular basis.

With the state shield final tomorrow, thought i'd have a quick think about those who have succeeded, and those who haven't in this year's one day competition.

Winners:
Grant Elliot -> top batting and bowling makes him an increasingly attractive option for the troublesome no.6 batting spot in the Black Caps.

Greg Hay -> Has had a solid, if unspectacular season for Central, and continues to make good progress, but the middle order for the national side is pretty solid and he's still a year or two away as is.

Daniel Flynn -> Hit a couple of hundreds and looked very good for a weak Northern side. Moronic decision to bring him into the national squad, and I hope it doesn't affect his confidence too much.

Martin Guptill -> the tournament's top run scorer, the rock around which Auckland's succesful season has been based, and a solid prospect. Unlikely to get into the national side any time soon, though, with McCullum, How, Ryder and maybe one day Vincent all more attractive options

Hamish Bennett -> The Timaru Terror has been a waste of space in the Canterbury lineup for the last few seasons, but finally came right this year with 16 wickets in 7 matches (including a 6 for against Auckland) and a solid performance against England. Needs to do it again next year before he even begins to become a selection prospect.

Leighton Burtt -> The other Cantab to benefit from bowling in Bond's slipstream. Has the competition's best strike rate and a regular wicket taker, both this season and last. Let Canterbury down with a poor bowling effort on an unresponsive pitch in the semi, but another player who may push for selection in coming seasons.

Nathan McCullum -> Another strong all round season for McCullum with plenty of run's and wickets keeping the pressure on Jeetan Patel for that second spinner role in the ODI squad.

Bradley Scott -> Continues to go about his business with plenty of wickets and the odd runs here and there. Short term prospect for the ODI squad.

Losers:
James McMillan -> after a strong A tour earlier in the year, McMillan settled back into his usual routine of injury and inconsistency, and as he gets older it seems less and less likely that his reported pace will ever be seen in a black uniform.

Brandon Hiini -> New Zealand's whitest Maori had a poor year with the ball and an indifferent one with the bat (though that could largely be put down to batting at no.9). His strong performances seem restricted to the first class arena which is a pity, as his medium pace would seem unlikely to threaten international test batting lineups.

Richard Sherlock -> Has any New Zealand cricketer ever generated so much talk, whilst playing so few matches? Back at CD, where he played a couple of mid season matches without making an impression, before disappearing off the radar again in the final round.

Colin de Grandhomme -> The Zimbabwean age group representative has had a tough year. One hopes he can fight back next season, but I'm not holding my breath.

David Houpapa -> His high handle grip has been compared to Gilchrist, but that's about where the similarities end. 65 runs at an average of 13 is poor in anyone's language. Perhaps he would benefit by batting higher in the order next year.

Bruce Martin -> Not a dreadful season, but his performances seem to be gradually declining with each passing year, and one doubts he'll ever make it to the national side with Captain Dan still having at least another 7 years in the tank, injury providing.

Should be a good final on Saturday, though I have to say, McCullum or no McCullum, Auckland should have far too much for Otago.

Really?

He didn't look "very" quick to me when I saw him on TV. Also, because of his rather diminutive stature, he doesn't get much bounce.
He's not. He's got an effort ball around 140, apparently, which is relatively quick for an 18 year old, but he's hardly ever going to be an express pace bowler. I'd be surprised if he ever gets quicker than, say, Chris Martin.
