Most over rated players

JBH001

International Regular
The list misses out Sehwag's knock of 105 on debut against Pollock, Hayward,Ntini and co at Bloemfontein in 2001/2002.

If I were to follow the set theory, the union of all the bowlers would have formed the nucleus of the bowling of all teams over the last decade. Does that mean, whoever scored hundreds during this period should be rated lowly?

I never subscribe to this theory of flat track bully thing. International cricket is international cricket wherever you play , however should be redefined as International cricket without zim and ban at test level. You can't just belittle a player's achievement over a period of time just by this single phrase, i believe.

And I believe he is the most successful batsman outside the subcontinent for quiet sometime now for India , perhaps just behind Dravid. He is one of the rare Indian batsmen who posess more shots on the back foot. Coming to his technique, who cares whether he hits the ball in the air or not? Arvind De Silva hit the ball in the air so often but still did that elegantly. There are so many others around anyway to satisfy the purists.

I am sure he would come out with flying colors when he tours England this year and Australia for the test series. But still, this mediocre attack thing will come back to haunt me for sure....
I know about his 105 but he scored that knock at no.6 (which is imo where he perhaps should be batting unless and until India find someone better) and not as an opening batsman - which is what I am talking about. And no, I do not mean attacks for the last decade, but attacks for the last half a decade (since around 2001/2002 or so).

I really could not care less how many shots he has, better to have a few shots judiciously selected than a whole range of them rashly used. IMO Sehwag simply lacks the technique to be a competent test opener against good pace attacks as he is near helpless against the swinging or seaming ball. He has too much of a reliance on a good eye, and not enough play close to the body, not enough foot to the ball, and not enough discretion and intelligence at the crease to consistently make it against good pace bowlers.

You are right, it will be interesting to see how Sehwag goes in England, though interestingly they arrive in the middle/end of the summer, and also what kind of attack England trundles out. I do think though that he will be completely dominated in Australia (like he was recently in SA) if he opens, unless he works on his batting of course.

I think you'd struggle to find people who rate Fernando or Dwayne Smith TBH.
I think including them in their respective sides is enough for me. They dont deserve that. :)

So their respective selectors rate them higher than I (in my humble opinion) think they deserve.

Dwayne Smith playing for West Indies as a fast-bowling all-rounder just shows the level of West Indian cricketer atm, and Fernando is a rhythm bowler who is almost never in rhythm and he just loves to bowl no-balls!!

Stewart did not fail against all bowlers on slow pitches. Yes, he was better with as much pace on the ball as possible, but that doesn't mean he couldn't play slower ones.

Stewart did indeed score some runs against Warne and Muralitharan - but he also failed against them and others who turned the ball, and not just because he couldn't (like most) pick the variations.

However, I've not undertaken any special analysis of the pace of the pitches involved.
As i said, if you take an analysis of the kind of wickets you will understand my point. Stewart has runs against them and many other spinners on many pitches around the world, which would hardly qualify him as being a poor player of spin

No, he's not.
But, he is doing all that is asked of him atm in the test side. Big test will be on the subcontinent (though he plays Murali well), and then, assuming he's still in the side, in England next year.

Wasn't actually a comment on Symonds TBH, more on Rob, but I still don't believe Symonds is or will be Test-standard. Undoubtedly, he's currently firmly fixed in the side, but more through luck than skill.

Not a chance is Sehwag better than Atapattu, Jayasuriya, Atherton, etc. And that either he or Hayden could ever be considered remotely as good at Test opening as any of the aforementioned says a fair bit about the poor quality of bowling of late..
From what i've seen i don't see what makes Atapattu, Jayasuriya & Atherton better openers that Hayden based on performance or natural ability, but not to say Hayden is way in front of them or anything.

The most overrated cricketers of alltime are :

Garry Sobers(as a bowler and as an allrounder)
Utter nonsense

Dennis"Greentop bully"Lillee.
Total crap

Shahid"The mindless slogger"Afridi.
Yea he is a mindless slogger but how does that make him over-rated

Verinder"Flat-track bully"Sehwag.
Yea he has made huge runs on some really flat decks againts some poor attacks, but to me with Sehwag based on 2 innings i've seen by him i.e 155 vs AUS Chennai 04, 100+ Adelaide 08 the other day, that even though his technique does definately look like he get owned over & over again againts top attacks in helpul conditions. I reckon he could still score big runs.

Simon"Injury Prone" Jones.
For the life of me what has Jones done to be over-rated?

Abdul"Neither a batsman nor a bowler & yet considered an allrounder"Razzaq.
A bit harsh i think, in his youth he definately was an all-rounder. But as his carrer went I'd say he was just woefully inconsistent capabale of producing the other super knock or top-spell.
