Australia's tour to Pakistan unlikely

I like this though:

"Last week Pakistan suggested Sri Lanka as an alternative venue, should Australia not be content with the security arrangements, and India has also been mentioned as a possible substitute."

Why aren't we going along with this? Both places would be fine.
I could be wrong, but I think this is a factual error in the article. PCB has been looking at alternative teams, not venues in case Australia pulls out. They still want the teams to tour Pakistan and they have been consistent in their stand that they would no longer play in "neutral" venues. I think India were approached for an ODI series, while SL were approached for either ODI or Test series.

This doesn't make sense. I am sure the security situation will not change whether you spend 30 days or 48 days there.

Now Its proved this tour has come under threat due to the IPL issue, since we know how badly BCCi and ICC want IPL to succeed and its highly important for publicity and marketability that all the high profile Aussie cricketers particapate in the first edition of the event so that the league can get off to a best possible start.

I have to respectfully disagree with you Xuhaib. First of all, BCCI has shown strong support to Pakistan on this issue. Their secretary even made a vague threat to Australia to honor the trip. I personally think that had something to do with Australia's change of heart. Secondly, while I never thought it was unsafe for Australia to tour, it is conceivable that CA got encouraged after observing a mostly violence-free election that just took place. I think we should credit them for putting aside their reservations (however unfounded) and agreeing to honor their commitments.

But don't you think that if their is a safety threat then how could a 30 day tour be safer then a 48 day tour.If some terrorist activity has already been planned against the Australian team then even if there is a 3 day trip the plan would still get executed regardless.

Well in theory less exposure means less threat. Obviously a whole tour can't take place in 3 days, otherwise they would've wanted to spend 3 days. They are fitting in the tour in the fewest amount of days possible, thereby reducing the risk their team faces. Let me repeat again that I don't think there's any risk to their team in the first place. However if CA believes that, than I don't have a problem with them modifying the tour dates and venues. At least they are not abandoning the tour altogether.

Anyways whatever is the new schedule I hope its the Odi's that get scrapped and not the tests, highly unlikely though.

Scrap the Twenty20s and the ODIs and just play 3 Tests with a decent bit of break in between.

Good stuff, time to talk about the cricket part of the tour. What is Pakistan test XI likely to look like when Australia get there do Akhtar, Asif, Gul have any new problems that i don't know about? Who are the cats that they are going to select to be opening?

Best PAK XI: (probably)

Salman Butt/Yasir Hammed
Shoaib Malik
Younis Khan
Mohammad Yousuf
Misbah-ul-Haq
Faisal Iqbal/Asim Kamal
Kamran Akmal
Shoaib Akhtar
Umar Gul
Mohammad Asif
Danish Kaneria/Mushtaq Ahmed

A few querries:

- I know Malik hasn't opened in a while but given that since Anwar's retirement PAK opening combination has chopped & changed with guys showing glimpses of their potential but with great inconsistency. Malik even though was makeshift looked a safe bet @ the top of the order from what i saw of him. Thus you could have the likes of Iqbal & Asim Kamal (what really has happened to him easuly one of the better PAK bats behind the big 3 now the big 2) batting @ 6.

- Also with people seemingly quesiton Kaneria's ability these days, with such great performances in England for so long surely despite his age Mushtaq Ahmed has to be in consideration especially if PAK preparing turning tracks or is there a deeper reason why Mushtaq isn't been selected?

- who are the youngsters who could be on show for PAK, i remeber Anwar Ali from the 2006 Under-19 WC, looked a real talent, anyone else?

I don't imagine Asim Kamal is currently anywhere near the side, though Pakistan being Pakistan you can never rule these things out.

How much more will a TV company pay for a day of ODI or 1\3 of a day of Twenty20 than 5days of Test?

Geez, with Shoaib coming in at no.8 that tail looks longer then an English tail of the 1990s.
