The tame surface at the Fardin Qayyumi Cricket Centre lived up to its name, as 27 wickets fell at an average of 51.41 over the course of a hard-fought draw. Cricket Web Colts fought back from a first innings deficit of 127 to declare their second innings and set a challenging target of 243 off 47 overs. The Masters XI batsmen played with some confidence but scored on 130-2 when the game was called.
On day one Dan Rai (59) and James Griffen (97) laid a solid platform of 159 for a big first innings total of 381. Griffen continued his maturing as a batsman and looked set for another first-class ton when he was caught off Klusener. With Daniel Towns (51) playing the anchor at one end, Shane Warne worked over the middle order pairing of Chris Butler and Shan Jasotharan with successive deliveries. The latter was caught at silly point, pushing forward to a well-landed legbreak. The Masters threatened to derail the good advances of the top order, forcing Will Kerr into action with another crucial knock. He played with the tail for the most part and was stranded on 87 when Greg Thomas padded up to a ball from Streak.
The response from the Masters was not as confident, measuring 73-3 at one stage. But the Colts were made to rue missed chances. Both Damien Martyn and Inzamam-ul-Haq were dropped well before they got to half-centuries and both batsmen cashed in with hundreds. Martyn scored the bigger of the two - 167 - though he never looked at ease at the crease. It was Inzamam who first departed, out for 123 and ending a massive stand of 268 for the fourth wicket. From that point the visiting batsmen played with increasing freedom and elevated the total past 500, finishing on 508 all out.
The Colts faced the better part of two days and a large deficit, quickly losing sight of their brilliant display against CW Black. When Jasotharan failed for the second time in the match, they still trailed by 61 runs with 4 wickets down. Kerr was summoned again to a pressure situation. This time he had the accomplished talent of Chris Butler as support. The chances were few and far between, as the batsmen played with care to put the Colts into the lead and a commanding decision with a partnership of 215. Butler drew level with Brendan Goff's career tally of 19 hundreds, facing 241 balls, but was caught bat-pad off Warne for 113. The lead then 154, the Colts needed a healthy contribution from Mike Wilson to ensure they would save the match. Duly he obliged and had fun doing so, scoring 34 of his 57 runs in boundaries.
Kerr rounded off a fantastic personal match, improving his first innings score by 58 runs. He passed 100 with relative ease and set a new high score for the second time this season. Kyle Wright declared leaving 47 overs for the Masters XI to survive, and by then Kerr had settled on 145. The remainder of the fifth day was largely without incident. Ed Smith secured the minor headlines with 63 not out of 140-2.

A different venue, yes, but the script was the same for Cricket Web Red against Cricket Web Black. For the second time this season Aseem Sharma scored a big hundred to reverse the odds and deny CW Black victory. When he came to crease the Reds trailed by 180 runs with 9 overs left on the third day. By the time he departed for 148 the lead was 149-3.
The weather on the first day was terrible, so Ash Chaulk had few reservations when he asked the Reds to bat first. At 105-2 he may have been second guessing himself, but CW Red stayed true to form and the fragile middle order collapsed. Rob Dauth again finished the highest scorer, only making 54, and the tail was called into action to put on 79 runs for the last 4 wickets and taking the total past 200 - 233 all out. It was a particularly poor CW Red effort, as detailed by guru Kwase Knight, as Nath Patrick was rewarded with 5 wickets in the innings.
What remained of day two was used by CW Black to force home the trueness of the pitch and further depress the Red supporters. James Stedman started off aggressively en route to the first of two half-centuries on his first-class comeback. He set the tone but Andrew Cloete emphasized it by racing through to 99 off 102 balls in the final session of the day. The following morning he was bowled for 113 and Armstrong (8) was hardly set when he too was bowled by Watt. The former Red captain took the wicket of acting Black captain Chaulk, for 1, and in limiting the score to 217-5, the Reds had fought back strongly into the game.
Still there was little doubt as to what would unfold in the second half of the innings. The depth of CW Black batting shone in support of Alex Blackman, who was composed for 65. CW Black went comfortably into the lead and Nick Borcich marshaled the innings past 400, eventually finishing not out with 46 of 413 total runs. CW Red survived the 9 overs left on day three and set out to defy the bookies again.
Sharma offered chances on 75 and 113, but played well enough to make those errors easily forgettable. He was not alone in his rearguard, joined by Mork (62) and Dauth initially (88). All through the order there were solid contributions to end of 480-6 declared. Only 39 overs were left in the game then, but Mork ensured that the Blacks would have no chance of victory, posting a target of 301. As things unfolded the wisdom of the late declaration become apparent. The Blacks cruised through the allotment of overs aggressively and were 158-1 when time ran out.

For the second game in succession Cricket Web Blue threatened to throw away a good position with careless batting. It took a special performance from skipper Travis Demeza with the ball and another confident unbeaten innings from Pete Young to curtail deja vu. Demeza produced the highlight of the game - the first hat-trick of the season - and finished with 10 wickets and a deserved Man of the Match award.
The first innings was disappointing for the home team, inserted by CW Blue and all out for 248. Rob Malone (76) and Nick Scott set the score up nicely with a partnership of 88 for the second wicket, but Sean Fuller chipped away at the middle order and was rewarded with his first 5-wicket haul this season. Demeza was equally potent and found the control he has lacked so often this season, finishing with 4 for 71.
In their reply CW Blue scaled the heights of 101-1 and then collapsed to 217 all out. Pete Young tried his best with 84, and for a while he and Stephen Young looked to be building toward a huge lead and total. They were undermined by Bryce Cunningham, however, who was fast and aggressive and took 5 for 47. His strike partner Xavier Rose took 3 for 50 in support. CW Green already had 31 runs to their name when they started a second innings in the middle. But they were met by a fired-up Demeza keen on avenging his first-ball duck.
The manner in which he did so was spectacular and entertaining. He started by rattling a ball off the gloves of Rob Malone jr. (10) and into those of Thamba Mamesh. And he proceeded to nip out 6 wickets in largely highlight-worthy fashion. Fuller took the tricky wicket of Andrew Garven for 39, and no other CW Green batsman showed much fight. A run later Raftery edged a drive through to Fuller in the slips. The next ball Darren Dubb-Lynch missed a full inswinging delivery and was struck plumb in front of middle stump. Demeza took his time setting the field for the all-important hat-trick ball. As he ran in to deliver it Cunningham pulled out of his stance and complained about the sight-screen. After a lengthy delay of 38 seconds Demeza ran in again and pitched a 95mph yorker that nearly shattered the batsman's toe. His instantaneous appeal was instantaneously upheld and the Blues erupted in celebration. Rose and Gundry played some brave strokes before the innings end, but CW Green were all out for 181 and posted a reachable target of 213. Left high and dry, Anthony Lezama walked off unbeaten with 71.
Confidence was overflowing come the CW Blue run chase. At point Gundry dropped Pete Young when he had 7 and CW Green took every chance from then on. There were only two. Mamesh romped to 54 from 65 balls, ultimately skying a catch to Gundry in the deep, and Corrin later took a second wicket when he took a return catch off Stephen Young (40). Dinu DeSilva came to the crease with 15 needed and took the opportunity to increase his season average to 17, scoring 7 not out in his second innings. Unfortunately Young finished short of a fourth hundred this season, and instead lowered his conversion rate from 75% to 60% by walking off with 95 not out.
