Series We'd Like to See

LongHopCassidy

There's been reams of speculation on 'what could've been' between the Windies of the 80's and Australia of 2000s, or the Invincibles of '48 and Australia of 2000s, or Bodyline England and Australia of 2000s. Noting a pattern here? :p

Personally, I think there's a few undone scenarios here. FWIW, I would have crawled over broken glass to see a match between 1975 and 1980 between West Indies and South Africa, for the standard of cricket alone. Procter, Rice, van der Bijl and Peter Pollock vs. the four prong would have rendered it unmissable, let alone the batting on show. Moreover, the political tension in the air would have magnified the outcome for all concerned and piled an extra dimension onto the series. Like the 'grovel' series, except better. Wouldn't miss it for the world (though my delayed conception may play a part).

Thoughts? Anything else which just should have been?

I personally would like to see how a Zimbabwe with their full quorum of players restored to them take on yer Banglas. Suspect the former would be more than a match.

It'd also be interesting to see New Zealand when they first acquired test status play Bangladesh (I'd assume the former had been trained to contemporary levels of fitness for the sake of fairness). Would finally settle those "are they worthy of test status/are they the worst test side ever" hypotheticals.

You'll Never Walk Alone
Current Australia ODI outfit against that South African team.

"I daresay even with Hogg in the team, the total is safe."

The Aussie team of the 70's with GChappell, Lillee, Thomson, Marsh vs the SAfricans of the early 70's

Early 1900s Australian side with Trumper, Hill, Noble, Macartney, Armstrong, Bardsley etc against anyone would be my wish.

I was going to say this one too because it requires less imagination than any of the other possibilities - it absolutely should have happened. By the time West Indies became the undisputed world no.1 it is likely that the great South African side of the late '60s would have either retired or been in decline, whereas they still would have been at their peak in the early-mid '70s when Chappelli's new breed came swaggering to the fore. It would have been some contest.

A man after my own heart.

Would love to see Darling's 1902 side play Armstrong's 1921 vintage. The winner to play the Invincibles.

Though it should be noted that there is a healthy number of old cricket writers and scholars who will go (or have already gone) to their graves believing that Bradman's immortals of 1948 would have to settle for third place among those listed above.

Would love to see a current side go up against them - with the pitch, bats, and protective technologies of the early 20th century. Some of these modern prima donnas might be in for a bit of a shock when they take their eyes off the ball and there is no helmet to protect their face from a Bart King bouncer :p.

80s NZ versus 2000s Australia.

The current team get our early stars like Bert Suttcliffe, Martin Donnelly, Stewie Dempster, Glenn Turner, Bruce Taylor and Jack Cowie. Than add in an invincible Bond. That would kick ass in world cricket atm.

Is that the UAE team when the captain didn't where a helmet against Alan Donald, who hit him in the head?
Sultan Zarawani is the man. Probably one of the dumbest people to have played international cricket, take that Brad Hodge! Wasn't poor either with a dozen top draw cars as well.

South Africa of the late 60s's and early 70's against India of any era in India. Said South African team against this current lot of Australians in Tests as well. Barry Richards and Graeme Pollock would have Lee, Johnson and Clark for breakfast IMO.

I'd like to see the Bodyline Series replayed under today's amended bouncer laws and legside fielding restrictions.
Not sure if that's a joke or not but it would be fascinating to know whether England could have beaten Australia without Bodyline, with such a strong side you'd think they would have been an excellent chance.
