Either way, yes, New Zealand's first victory over Australia was in 1974, in the second series between the two countries. Intreguingly, between 1973\74 and 1992\93, New Zealand's record against Australia read: P28, W7, L10, D11. Not terribly bad, really.
It's not that intriguing, surely? Pretty much co-incides with someone's playing career.

I'd suggest the NZ win over the Windies at Carisbrook in 1979/80 was an upset - although helped in no small part by the creative umpiring of Fred Goodall...

Fred gets all the credit because of ColinCroftGate but Mr Hastie actually sits along Richard Hadlee in many cricket record books for helping him achieve the match record number of LBW's.

Well, several people, in fact.

New Zealand were far from a one-man team.

What I find to be intriguing, though, is the fact that Australia and New Zealand didn't even play a Test series until the early-1970s.

Because Australia never rated us back then, so couldn't be bothered playing us, much like they are doing with Bangladesh a.t.m., it seems.

Sri Lanka v Australia 1996 WC Final. Yeah its ODIs, but still the greatest upset ever.
No way that was an upset Sri lanka were easily the best eam on show throughout that tournament, if anything had Australia beaten Sri lanka in the final it would been an upset considering how well the lankans were playing in the tournament and how patchy Australians were through the tournament, btw after scoring 250 odd Aussies had a very good chance of winning but the dew factor made the run-chase a calk-walk for the lankans in the end.

Which is in direct contrast to the NZRFU (as it was known then) and their approach to the woeful Wallabies in the 1950s through to the 1970s... we're a giving people.

If you were talking about ODIs, then Zimbabwe beating Australia in their very first ODI in the 1983 World Cup. Sure Australia were poo back then, still you would of backed Australia to have won.

Saw a photo with Michael Holding kicking down some stumps. With such technique he could of been a handy rugby player as well.

I love that photo. Just typical Holding - only he could make petulantly kicking over a stump look that cool.
