Rate: Ch.9 commentators

Haha Matt. Tried so hard as well.

Really like Slater tbh. His enthusiasm is excellent and he provides different insights on the all-conquering era of Australia Cricket.

His voice is also dreamy.

If I'm correct, Slater and Ian Chappell are the only C9 commentators who also commentate on Star Cricket?

It'd mean they're in the box twice as much as the other C9 commentators I assume?

Yeah, I'm a big Slats man. Nasser & he the pick of the new generation for me. Not so sure about the dreaminess of his voice (), but has a lot more charisma than, say, Taylor whose analysis is right up there.

Always give Slater huge credit for being the first to spot Gilly's squash ball in the WC final when commentating for Sky over here and being able to explain exactly what advantage it gave.

I think that the 9 comm box is overloaded with commentators. Some contribute nothing.
I think Greig is past his time. O'Donnell isn't the right type for television and Healy isn't needed, Taylor and Slater both do a better job as young commentators. Rid of Chappell, keep Lawry and Richie for the old guard.

Richie
Lawry
Taylor
Slater
Nicholas

and 1 other commentator, to be filled by a representative of the touring team. An Indian for the indians, English for England etc.

Richie's tales (save the Symonds re-run)
Richie's losing it a bit. Still great but he's not what he was. My main gripe with him these days is his inability to watch Symonds bat without relating the story of him batting in the 03 WC with Ponting in the Pakistan game. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Word for word. I have it pretty much memorised. "Its funny to think that for a long time Symonds wasn't able to make it in international cricket. He had enormous potential, but wasn't able to turn it into performance. All that changed of course, after he played what I think might be one of the best one-day innings I've ever seen. It was in the 2003 World Cup, and there had been considerable disagreement as to whether Symonds should even be there. Australia had been reduced to 4/87 when Symonds came to the crease to meet his captain Ricky Ponting. And Ponting said something to him which changed Symonds - in the middle of all the hubbub and noise, Ponting took Symonds by the arm, and leant in and said (in a breathy whisper) "Be here at the end". Symonds scored 143*, and Australia won the match. And he's never looked back from that moment." Does my head in. 8/10 regardless.
Haha. Commented on that in the 'What grinds your cricketing gears' thread.
LOL! He does say it a lot. (Richie regarding Symonds at the WC)
Haha, it's really rather hilarious how many people this annoys. It's been annoying me since pretty much the 2nd time he said it, in the (English) summer of 2003. I just don't get it - he's never in my time had such a fixation with any one little thing.

It's far from confined to just when Symonds bats. Said first and second (and probably 20th by the end of the summer) time of mention occurred with Flintoff. And I've lost count of the number of other players he's mentioned it in context of.

Yeah they usually get a touring team commentator in but they haven't this summer...The reason is probably because the box is far too packed already.

Richie 10/10- The best, the voice and brain of cricket. Isn't on air enough in my opinion. Hope he continues to call until he can no longer do so.

Nicholas-8.5/10- Not an entertaining commentator, but a very professional one. Calls the game as he sees it, seems quite collected, and has a nice voice for the job. Second best.

Slater-7/10- Seems a bit excited at times, but is quite entertaining overall. Brings a very
modern spice to the panel, which is a relief when Ian and Bill rave on about something which happened umpteen years ago every second over.

Taylor-6.5/10- Alright, but just needs to collect himself a little bit, needs to think before he
speaks. Moderately entertaining. All that was said about Slater can be applied to Taylor as well.

Lawry-6/10- Bill has got a great enthusiasm for the game, which transcends through his voice. When something happens, raw excitement comes out, which is terriffic. However, he often seems in the past, and his stories have none of the enchantment which Richie's has.
Also seems just a little negative with his comments, growling about something every over. At his best when there is a lot happening on the field, one of the worst to listen to during a boring passage of play.

Greig- 4/10 His commentary is littered with Anti-Australianism and dumb comments, but some comments are quite good. The commentary box needs a taint of foreign injection, but he is too blatant for my liking. I don't mind his pitch reports though.

Healy-3/10- Can be awful at times. Greigy isn't even half as blatant as Healy is Australian. Some of the comments he says are so biased, you cringe. Is alright when the action is a bit sluggished, but when it is thick and fast, the words don't come out very well and his bias sticks out like a sore thumb.

O'Donnell- 3/10- No charisma what so ever. Has a fairly decent knowledge of the game and is a good bloke, but not really the type to fire up a commentating team.

Chappell-2/10-The worst of the lot IMO. Has that "Things were better back in my day" attitude which I don't like at all. Move with the times. Also has the same grumpiness of Lawry, only worse. Only redeeming points are his sound knowledge of tactics and the game itself, which can provide useful insights.

I'm not fussed with this rating lark but I'll offer an assessment:
O'Donnell - should have stuck to the presentation lark, he does that well at least. Not a commentator, at all.
Nicholas - liked him over here but just don't understand what he's doing in Australia TBH. He just always feels totally out-of-place.
Benaud - always been the voice of cricket for my generation and many before. Sounds even better in Australia than England for mine. Silly little Symonds flaws aside, top man.
Lawry - always been the voice of Australian cricket for me, alongside Greig. A bit excitable and does rather overdo the "goes bang", but never mind. Australian cricket without him is unthinkable to me.
Greig - basically a case of read above. Lawry and Greig are inseperable to my mind, I've never heard an Australian cricket broadcast without either.
Chappell - never really liked him TBH, can't fully put my money on why but sst's post is a decent starting-point.
Taylor - better than he used to be, but I always feel he retired too early.
Healy - again, better than he used to be but not as good as the oldies. Probably will end-up being tho.
Slater - one of the best "recent" commentators for mine, he and Hussain are about the only decent ones to emerge in the last 4 or 5 years, though he's not really recent at all, he first commentated nearly a decade ago now. Always liked him in many ways.
Warne - :wallbash:

I remember Symonds doing some commentating during the finals of the CB series last year. It was goddamn painful to hear,I hope he doesn't retire young:laugh: . I will usually keep the cricket on at all times, but I was considering switching off the TV, it was that bad. The actual match was good as well, so that wasn't the problem

Hahaha.

Oh man it's gonna be hilarious when he gets another gig with Channel 9. They should appoint John Buchanan as his co-commentator IMO. It'll be Tony and Bill x 100,000.
Do you have much (if any) memory of 1998\99 when Chappell and Botham were in the box at the same time?

yeah good call on all i feel but just a few points i must make....

i think richie is done.....like a boiled egg, you leave it on the stove too long and it turns to ****. i enjoy his call but just recently i notice a few little pauses and loosing his train of thought a little.

the way slater and taylor get into each other is really quite funny at times, and gives us a little insight to what it would have been like out in the middle during those years they were at the top of the order together, i feel slater still really wants to be out there. and that eagerness shows. i like it SLATS keep it up and he'll be no 1 soon enough.

where as tubby is the general, a real great guy, who i could emagine goes home at night and writes a bunch of things to laugh about with heals or slats the next day, these guys are a realy great asset to the call

the thing with healy is he has a real dry sence of humour and continualy tries to stur tony greig up, i feel alot of his bias comments are deliberatly there to wind a few people up. what else do you expect in a bloody queenslander.

let O' Donnell have his cricket show and post match chat, he has a real affiliation with the players and is a really likable guy. even though if you had of blinked a few years back you would have missed his carrer, he still adds alot to the team..

team Lawry and Greig together and you have fire works, that could have you glued to the telle for a whole session. if the opposition get a few wickets or score some runs, expect Greig to be real chirpy, when its the other way around, expect the oppisite.

Nicholas a breath of fresh air. dont know too much about him, but enjoy the pommy theme. should get beefy botham out here to replace greig and probobly dean jones or mark waugh to replace chapelle.... time to call it quits for the older blokes now, they have done a good job in easing the younger guys in and an even better job over the years. but there comes a time before your dead your meant to retire and do the gardening.

yeah just a quick observation,..... the reason why you dont like chappell is the same reason us aussies dont really like him... he's a south australian, there all a bit queer. and taylor didnt retire early he was pushed out unfortunatly, but for us timely. coz hayden was over due. and waugh was ready for the captain job. see i feel slater was the one who called it quits a little early. he still misses the game and looks like he would plaster most attacks around the world, you can tell by the passion for the game he has.
