Or they could simply try and bat normally until half an hour before lunch tomorrow

If they survive that long, they'll be 150 ahead, the Indians will be absolutely knackered and they'll have 75 overs to bowl

By declaring now, they run the outside chance of Indian scoring quickly and putting some pressure on Australia in the fourth innings

That's because they normally prepare ridiculous raging turners instead.

Seems like it's one of those wickets where it's not hard to survive, but it is difficult to score freely. Right now, given the Aussies gave up 117 runs t dropped catches, they'd be pretty happy where they are. Things happen quickly there late day 4/ day 5, but both teams have such strong line ups a draw is still well and truly on the cards.
What is wrong with turners? I seriously want to know, because I have no idea why people call that a bad pitch. There is nothing wrong with a raging turner, and nothing wrong with a raging seamer's paradise.
Still want someone to explain it to me.

Sums up the interest in the game at the moment

169.5 Pathan to Symonds, 2 runs, Australia are level, Symonds flicks a full ball angling into his pads through midwicket, the crowd roar in approval as the deficit is now zero, oh actually it's because someone from the crowd has run on to the field

The security guards pounce and drag him off. An now a second person runs on to the field, he has a flag. The first was just prancing around.

Commentators who think Ponting will declare underestimate both his conservatism and his spitefulness. There's no way Ponting will give the Indians any sort of a sniff. He would not be bothered at all to see them rot away in the sun for three days, especially when they might be thinking that he will declare and open the game up.*

*Of course he may make a complete ass of me and declare in the next 10 minutes. lol
Nup, I'm with you. No way will Ponting declare. Hates to give ground, especially since the trophy is in the kit bag. I reckon he'll bat until, well the 10th wicket, whenever that is.

I never understand this, when bowling to a lower order batsman like Johnson, why bowl wide of the stumps, make him play. TBH IMO that Johnson is bit of a slogger.

I agree if a raging turner is wrong then the perth pitch which is to bouncy is wrong too.
spinners are meant to be no less part of the game.
Perth was tame, just wasnt a great pitch because of uneven bounce

Decent wicket should have even bounce, enough pace to encourage shots and pace bowlers, and turn later in the game

Ehhh.....I don't want every pitch to be the same. I like crazy bouncy wickets, crazy turners, etc. Variety is half the fun of cricket.

Gee, this Aussie team certainly has ludicrous batting averages

Symonds 40
Ponting 60
Hussey 80
Johnson 100

What next ? Haddin slots in the team and averages 120 ??
