So you're saying without Symonds' performance Australia would be a chance in this match? I was referring to his performance being in the side, not who would have replaced him. His 2 wicket have been crucial and his 66 runs also.
Symonds is clearly a sorcerer, and is surely sucking the life from Hussey and Ponting to fuel his evil agenda on the cricket pitch. So its possible.

Laxman doesnt suscribe to shielding the tail - singles off 2nd and 1st deliveries of succesive overs - didnt he see Clarke take 3 in an over at SCG and Symonds take 2 in the prior over?

Haha. Day light savings! Comes with good and bad.

But, bit silly of them not to show the news at the tea break.
It's channel 9 though, which means it's mandatory for them to do silly things.

Reckon Lee should have at least aimed 1 at the stumps that last over, missed out on a good opportunity there.

You're laughing at Victorians about daylight savings when you're the one missing out on actual playing time. We're missing out on the players munching on loaves of bread and slurping casseroles...

Oh, they'll 100% bat tonight - probably within 5 overs. It's RP Singh FFS :p.

If he wasn't in the side, someone else would be, though, and it's quite possible they could have done better. There's also the whole butterfly effect thing - if Symonds wasn't in the team, maybe Lee would have bowled earlier and taken 5/4.. or maybe Gilchrist would have scored more runs if he came in early and faced different deliveries. Unlikely, sure, but possible.

This actually isn't about my dislike of Symonds or even how much I rate him; it's just a pet hate of mine when people say things like you did, because you never know what the outcome would have been under different circumstances. There's no denying he's had a good game and a positive impact on the match, but saying Australia would definitely be out of it if he wasn't there isn't true.

Whatever it takes!!!
Didn't see Dhoni v Pietersen in England last year mate? Dire.

You're right - its the context that counts. Every side appeals to umpires when things aren't out. Partly it's gamesmanship, but there's nothing wrong with asking the question, beacuse umpires are there to answer them.
I had a giggle with that inside edge lbw shout with Kumble, because there's no way known he couldn't see there'd been a massive edge into the pad. As I said, I have no problem with the appeal per se, the problem arises when you get on your high horse about the same thing in the previous test, then turn around and do it the next week.

There could be absolutely no doubt about the lbw appeal. There was clearly an easily discernable massive edge which Kumble and the close fielders could not have helped but see.
As for working the umpires, I commend to you some video of the 2001 series in India. India invented the four men around the bat on a dust bowl and appeal for something every ball method of appealing.
Certainly, though, I would say Warne was a master at working umpires over. The subtle comment here, the raised eye brow there - he was very, very good at it.

You're kidding right? Sreesanth's behaviour in a limited time has matched that displayed by McGrath over a 13-14 year career.

India are fortunate he's not here imo. His behaviour could be nothing more than a distraction to the team and frankly, he would have been pumped anyway. He couldn't have done any better job in this test than the guys you've got there now.

Kudos to India and to Kumble for their day yesterday and for the 600 respectively. Really well bowled and they hav eclearly outplayed Australia so far. If they lose from here there should be a royal commission.

This game is going along so fast, it's unbelieveable - more than 2 completed innings in just two days. Great stuff.
one thing abt the appeal... While I agree there were many who were wrongly criticizing Australia for appealing when they know it is not out (it happens all the time, tbh), I don't think the ones who criticized "Gilchrist" alone for it were wrong... He makes too much fuss about the way he plays the game and for one who acts that precious, he will get bagged for appeals like that and then comments like "The whole world is watching, champ".... He was castigated for that appeal and rightly so, IMO. You don't see Kumble, Dhoni or Ponting give lectures on walking and playing in a "sporting" way or whatever... So for me, while criticizing Australia was definitely stupid about those appeals, it was pretty reasonable w.r.t Gilchrist.

India are assured of a lead of 425 here. RP can definitely bat, and VVS will go for it. Given our knack of sometimes struggling to knock over the last couple...I reckon 424 a certainty.

interesting that india were in this position in melbourne as well and died (at the end of day 2)
but we have done well... so credit to the bowlers and this match is about 60-40 india instead of 100-0 australia in melb

plus things that are in our advantage is.... the pitch isnt as bad.. it looks like a good pitch for batsmen ... i recn its gonna be better than in the 1st innings.. less juice and bounce and ball will come onto bat still really well .... key is the new ball..
bad thing is no haydos

They would be delighted at this stage if they can squeeze out a lead of 400 i.m.o. Psychologically very important.

Disappointing performance with the bat by Kumble in this match when some runs would have come in mighty handy. He needs to make it up with the ball. My feeling is that Australia will win unless Kumble comes in with a special performance taking the crucial middle-order wickets. I think our inexperienced pace attack will struggle under the pressure and I have a bad feeling that Ponting will choose this moment to come out of his slump. On the plus side it does look like there was a bit of turn for Clarke and Symonds which is all that Kumble really needs.
