Am I Un-Australian?

I have followed the Aussie cricket team very closely since 84/5 - through the bad years and into the good. But for some reason I find myself barracking for India in this test? Am I un-Australian?
Yes you are. Even though you are probably an Aussie citizen, you will now be deported.

No such thing as being un-Australian. I hate the term and what some people try to imply by using it.
un-Australian is a most hideous, john howardesque term. Please try and never use it.
I agree it's a crap term, usually used by jingoistic neocon wankers to deride anyone who opposes their agenda. In this case, however, the thread starter called it on himself, so it's a free-for-all.

Really? Yes, at 84/5 it was looking dodgy and I was following them closely too, esp. when Symonds and Gilly really started to counter-attack. Don't know how you feel now though at 50/1.
 I think he may have meant 1984-85.

 Anyone can support whoever they want! For whatever reasons they want.
Except England. Any Australian who supports England at anything, against anybody, needs their head read.

:lol::laugh::lol: DoG, I hope your post was in jest? If so, funniest thing I've read on here for a little while.

TBH, I don't think this is a comment completely devoid of merit, if a little blunt. I cannot, ever, see there being a circumstance where I'll be outright happy to see England lose (or, more accurately perhaps, play sufficiently poorly to deserve to lose) a Test-match. Now, lots can change, and maybe things will be different should the unlikely event of England dominating World cricket for 15 years come to pass in, say, 2027 (I'll be 41!!!!!!!! :scared: AAAAAAARRRRRGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!).

But wanting to see a good standard of competition is different to wanting your team to lose a match.

Oh I don't know, I was quite disappointed to see the rain come on the last day at Galle, because sri Lanka so patently deserved to win that Test. To put it another way, I don't think I've ever taken less pleasure in seeing England avoid defeat. Would have been different if we'd been 300-3, but as it was a result was probably less than an hour away there.

Yeah, I was too - as I said, I think it's more accurate to say I'm disappointed in seeing England play poorly enough to deserve to lose. It always disappoints me to see a result go the way of a team that didn't deserve it, and vice-versa. If England play poorly enough to deserve to lose, I want them to lose, and that applies to any team.

But I always want England to play well. Never, ever go into a match wanting to see them play poorly.

God, you must get disappointed a lot

Well, we haven't done too badly the last 5-6 years. It wasn't that long ago that England won eight Tests on the trot (and 11 out of 12).

But yes, the last 12 months has been a let-down.

I console myself with the fact that you had to live through 1986-1989; I have absolutely no memory whatsoever of it. I just wish my memories started in 1990 rather than 1992, as I missed that short golden spell we had then.

Want |= expect.
Yes. A subtle, but very important distinction I agree.

Well, I had to live through 1984-89 ittbt. From the retirements of Lillee Chappell and Marsh up to 89 Ashes, Australian cricket (bar the 87 WC) was pretty smelly.

Yeap. England sucked 86-89, Australia sucked 84-88\89. Was more down to the premature loss of Hughes, Yallop, Alderman (temporarily) and Hogg for mine than the triple retirement mind.

Fortunately, neither have been quite that bad since then. Can't believe there's ever been a blacker period in the cricket history of either country.

No, you are simply tired of seeing your team winning everything. You want to see excitment and that's only possible by an even contest.

Just before my time mind, but between 1973 and 1977 England couldn't win a Test series against anyone other than India.

Edit: my mistake, we beat NZ in a short series in 1974-75 (the Lever-Chatfield incident)

Its a very Australian thing to do - barraking for the underdogs is what we do best. So even if its against our own team its natural to hope the underdog side will do well. Until such point where they start beating us, then we want to smash the hell out of them until they are begging for mercy, we then feel sorry for them again and hope they will do well....on another tour. Today I am at the - I want to smash them stage.

Question: Would it be un-Australian to want Baghdatis to wipe the floor with Lleyton tonight?

Cos, I really hate the little skidmark.

No one wants Lleyton Hewitt to win.

The people that do, really don't, they just think they do.

Even when I bet on Hewitt to win, I want him to lose.
