CRICKET: Association to select new national coach team

Story by RICHARD MWANGI
Publication Date: 1/10/2008

The Cricket Kenya sub-committee charged with the responsibility of picking a new national team coach will meet in Nairobi on Saturday.

The association has been scouting for a new coach following the departure of Jamaican Roger Harper, who left last September.

The six members of the committee will each produce a short list of their preferred candidates for discussion. The top candidates will then be invited for interviews, the CK chief executive officer, Tom Tikolo, has said.

The committee comprises the CK chairman Samir Inamdar, CK treasurer Nasoor Verjee, Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association acting chairman Martin Bentley, CK selection sub-committee chairman Sukbans Singh, David Waters and Tikolo.

Although a former Indian coach, John Wright, had shown interest in coaching Kenya, he did not apply for the position. Tikolo said the majority of the applicants were English, though applications had been received from all over the world.

Tikolo also said South Africa coach, Andy Kirsten, who was assistant coach to Sandip Patil during the 2003 World Cup, had also shown interest on the job.

Also, the four-day International Cricket Council Intercontinental Cup match between Kenya and Namibia, set for Nairobi Gymkhana towards the end of the month, will now be held in Sharjah, Dubai, early next month.

Tikolo said the national team, which was supposed to leave for Dubai on Saturday, will now fly out on January 26 and play Namibia three days later.

He said ICC moved the tournament from Nairobi to Dubai for fear of insecurity engulfing the country because of the disputed presidential elections. Kenya will play UAE from February 4 to 7 instead of January 18.

Tikolo said Namibia will face UAE from January 23 to 26 and will have a two day break before meeting Kenya. He said: “All is not lost for Kenya as we will host Ireland in August.”

Namibia being thrashed by a Zimbabwe 'A' team (of sorts) at the moment - have to say I'm surprised. Scores
I'm not really, that Zimbabwe Provinces XI contains some pretty good players. Ed Rainsford, Graeme Cremer and Blessing Mahwire are all fine bowlers, while they've got some good batting potential. Really the only decent player that Namibia possess is Gerrie Snyman, who is a top notch all-rounder.

Anyone, can u pls explain wats the level of cricket among the people of Kenya... Do we see Cricket being played in the streets, Parks, Schools in Kenya?

Can we expect countries such as Kenya & Ireland advance from here or is it like a glass roof?

As far as Ireland goes I'd think that the population is high enough to overcome the fact that cricket is nowhere near the most popular sport. with the right funding and development I'd reckon Ireland could match New Zealand and West Indies. And Irish people are always up to support an Irish team in any sport you could imagine, including extreme Ironing...

Well any team with the right funding and development could match the best. Problem is that many nations just don't see cricket as a mainstream sport in their country, which is quite disappointing, especially for Ireland, Scotland and parts of North America.

Well nothing is being affected on the world scale (maybe apart from a few million lost here and there from the ICC hip pocket) but there's nothing really to resolve regarding Kenya, Pakistan etc. They will be ready when they feel it's the right time, you can't force a team back onto the playing field.

Cricket in Kenya (probably not very accurate)

Basically Kenya's cricketing community is very tight knit and is centred around Nairobi, Mombasa. These are the main cricketing centres although I think there is some cricket played in Kisumu, Naivasha and Eldoret. Nairobi has quite a few cricket cricket grounds nearly all of which are maintained by sports clubs which can be a bit costly to join whereas schoolswise cricket is mostly played by a handful International schools with their on pitches and some public schools which have affiliations to cricket clubs. Most domestic players get into the game thorugh these schools from whence they go on to join clubs which form the core of domestic competitions and basically when they are good enough they enter the national team setup. Good examples of players who have gone through that process would be, Tanmay Mishra, Alex Obanda and Elijah Otieno. I have absolutely no idea if any of the universities in Kenya has a cricket set up.

For a country like Kenya to make the next level we need a much larger pool of players playing a decent level of cricket because at present there is no outright national league (pending its launch this year) and nearly all of the current national squad play in the Nairobi league. Besides that there is very little chance a teams like Kenya or Ireland will make much if any progress beyond where they are now, leave alone catch up with the test world solely on the ICC's funding, therefore initiatives like Kenya's national league need alot of external backing from the corporate world which is not very easy to get if Cricket is not suitably visible.

So Zimbabwe Provinces won by 8 wickets V Namibia... Namibians played well in the second innings but its the first innings that costed them this game... Come On Namibia ur much better team then that...

It will be interesting to see how Zimbabwe firsts go against Pakistan...both teams undergoing political trouble and in a rough patch atm.
