Which has been more impressive?

The current streak includes an impressive 3-0 clean sweep over the strong South Africans away from home, a feat that hadn't been achieved in something like 100 years...They also beat the second best team in the world at the time at home 5-0, another impressive feat...Then the Sri Lankans who at the present time are probably the strongest they've ever been at Test cricket and now 2 against the Indian side who are probably a better unit than the side that toured Australia in Waugh's streak.

Waugh's contains 5 wins against what was really a massively weakning and poor Windies side...yet at the same time their streak includes a win in tricky subcontinental conditions.

I go for Ponting's.

The current side has really destroyed all and sundry in a manner I never expected to see so often at this level.

However that said I would still choose Tugga's side. Hard to explain but I loved watching those guys far more than I do the current team. Really decided by intangibles for me.

Definitely Ponting's. 2006-2008 has been a stronger period of world cricket IMO, to begin with. 2000-2004 or so was really a pretty average time in between the peaks of a number of great players, and Australia played some woeful sides during that period and during the streak, the West Indies in particular, but India and Pakistan weren't exactly at their best in that summer either. Ponting's side faced Bangladesh, but one of those was actually quite a tricky test, and Waugh's team also had a game against Zimbabwe.

Beating England 5-0 was a massive feat given the 2-1 loss in '05 and the fact that England were pretty clearly rated the #2 side in the world, and the win in Adelaide against England was at least as significant as Waugh's win in Mumbai. Then you've got the 5 consecutive wins against South Africa, who were also a strong side, and 3 of those wins away. Those alone make up for 10 wins, and then Sri Lanka and India are also strong sides at the moment, and India in particular have been a stern challenge.

There are two wins in Ponting's streak which have some questions over them, namely the second win against South Africa (where the rain assisted Australia greatly) and the most recent one (umpiring), but Waugh's streak wasn't without its close calls.

Waugh's cause I like him better.

He was a better captain than Ponting, and that was when Hayden, McGrath and Warne dominated every team.

Ponting's average as captain is like over 60 so he is batting better.

I am expecting Ponting to beat the streak next test.

So...Waugh had Hayden, McGrath and Warne dominating every team...while Ponting hasn't had that luxury always...and that means Waugh's streak is better? Wouldn't that mean Ponting had a tougher job and therefore his streak was better?

I think Pointing's team accompliments outshine Waugh's just slightly based on the strength of the bowling attacks.

Waugh had Warne & McGrath, both in there prime (Well, Warne's 2nd prime) and not to forget Dizzy to form one of the best 3 prong attacks cricket has seen. Not to forget the likes of Lee, Bichel, Kasper, McGill and Flemming as the 4th bowler. He had riches the likes that only the Windies of the 70's and 80's have seen.

Whereas Pointing also had the likes of Warne & McGrath, whilst Warne was pretty much stunning until the end, McGrath certainly wasn't the bowler he was in prime years. Yes he was still very good. But not the absolute dominater like he was during the Taylor/Waugh years. The other bowlers like Dizzy dropped a huge amount in form under Pointing (Not saying it was his fault), Kasper & McGill got old, the likes of Johnson and Tait are still unproven and Nathan Hauritz and Dan Cullen actually played test cricket. I feel the need to repeat that. Nathan Hauritz and Dan Cullen actually played test cricket! Clark and Lee have been huge over the last 2 years, with Lee improving a hell of alot, but you'd have to say that McGrath/Warne/Dizzy/whoever is better than what Pointing's had.

So I'd say Pointing's team gets my vote because it was a trifle bit harder.

I would go for Ponting's streak for sure, as much as i rate Steve Waugh as a captain and a player i don't think his streak matches Punter's.
Punter has been able to extract tremendous consistency from a relatively weaker bowling-attack (on paper and reputation i might add) as compared to the one that Waugh had.
Anyways congrats to Ponting for leading the side as well as he has done, but he hardly gets the credit he deserves for that.

Waugh's was more convincing but at the same time it was pretty easy. West Indies were responsible for 5 of them and New Zealand a few iirc.

On the other hand Ponting's team almost lost to Bangladesh but also had to take 5 matches off both England and South Africa. So which streak was more impressive? NFI.

Waugh's, cause

1) I like him a lot better than Ponting

2) Today's test can't be said to be a legitimate victory

The 1999-2001 streak easily IMO.

Achieved against better opposition, by-and-large; inclusive of 16 rather than 14 wins in genuine Tests; and there was pretty much no game that should have gone the other way, there are any number in the ongoing-as-of-this-post one.

The very first of the streak might well have been different had Kallis caught Hussey; the second would probably have been drawn but for being the final one in the series and maybe lost but for rain; the fourth would have been drawn had the rules been applied properly, though obviously but for lost time wouldn't have needed to be; the fifth was a one-wicket win; the eighth obviously should have been drawn and possibly lost; and of course the fourteenth should have been drawn or maybe lost but for bad Umpiring.

If there's any such doubts about the previouss streak, they're minimal in number. Nearly every single one was utterly convincing.

Interesting that in both 16 Test Streaks only 5 matches were away from home.

I went for Pontings but only just, both remarkable performances.
