Andrew Symonds as a Test cricketer?

Is Andrew Symonds now good enough at Test level?

I can't see Symonds in another national test XI except Bangladesh, Zimbabwe or the WI. He wouldn't even make ours. Oram is the greater allrounder by far and Sinclair, Fulton, Fleming and Styris to name a few are better batsmen than him.
What? Symonds would moonwalk into the New Zealand side. Clearly you're watching a different team. Symonds has a fine domestic record. He would easily make New Zealand.

His 2 centuries have come when the team has been under IMMENSE pressure. Not just pressure. Immense pressure. A guy like that who performs when the chips are down is invaluable.
If the umpiring had been of a decent standard then Symonds would have made 52 and 30 respectively. Good contributions, but hardly convincing. Then when you factor in how much he looked like getting in, then I wouldn't exepect much from Symonds in the future, unless poor umpiring or catching intervenes.

Symonds is taking the spot of Simon Katich, Adam Voges, Marcus North & Chris Rogers (yes, I know he's an opener) all of which are better test/FC batsman for mine.
And I may as well throw in Shane Watson's name too.

The less we see of Symonds in white the better tbh.
Not to mention Brad Hodge and David Hussey too, fairly good batsmen those two.

It's decent. It's not great, though, and when you consider the pitches he bats on, it doesn't really have a patch on Sinclair's or Fulton's.

IMO, anyone who can get 150 in a test against India (regardless of Umpire Decisions) would walk into most international teams.

Brad Hodge got a double century against arguably better bowling attack and he's not in the side.

Lunacy.

No. Key word for me is arguably. And for me, what Symonds provides with the ball and in the field gives him the edge I feel.

As an all round package yes i would. Brilliant in the field, can bowl and is more than handy with the bat.
They don't need that though. They need a specialist batsman and that's what Sinclair is. He's a better batsman than Symonds - his bowling doesn't really come into much given they have Oram, Vettori and Franklin who are better allrounders than he is.

For the same reason that I spent three hours making a video of Grebes diving to Kasabian this afternoon, I've created the following list to question the ultimate validity of this statement:

Graeme Fowler
Roshan Mahanama
Graham Dowling
David Lloyd
Graeme Hick
Nasser Hussain
Tim Robinson
Andrew Hall
Ian Smith
Misbah-ul-Haq
Shahid Afridi
Mohammad Ashraful
Faoud Bacchus

Discuss.

Haha. Hall, Afridi, Smith and Ashraful. Yeah, they'd walk into any team...

A list of players who have made 150 or more runs against India in an innings.
Haha, yea, I was being thick. Much as I'd like to try to stand by my general point and argue that what I said originally would still be true, I don't think I can argue Andrew Hall into the Australia side.

Ok then, any batsman who can score 150 against England and India would walk into most international teams.

Can't find any statistical anomalies to do you over here. Andrew Jones is the closest but only made 143 against England - and was actually quite good in the first place - Kamran Akmal made 154 against us and four centuries against the Indians - but none of those passed 119.

Nah, I've got one. Andrew Symonds. Disproves the theory himself imo. :p

Symonds has been a breath of fresh air after the departures of Martyn and Langer in the batting order.

Gun player nowadays.
