Milano - San Remo
294 KILOMETRES
THE SPRING CLASSIC
LA CLASSICIMA
WILL A GROUP CROSS THE POGGIO?
Alessandro Petacchi claiming the sprint in 2005
The startfield
The field relaxing up Passo di Turchino
The race started slowly, with an insignificant breakaway slipping away after 30 km. They got eleven minutes, but were never really a threat, and the only significant occurrence in the first 225 km was the crash of Erik Zabel and Tom Steels.
Zabel staring at the peloton
The real fun began when Hincapie (Discovery) attacked a second time.
Fensome joined in attempting a long attack, and got company from Sergey Ivanov (Astaná). With 40 km to go, the two had amassed a two-minute lead over the pack, with Hincapie hunting close behind.
Into the Cipressa, Fensome leads Ivanov
At the foot of La Cipressa, with 33 km to go,
Fensome and Ivanov held a lead of 2'30, and
Fensome appeared to be the stronger as he wrested a tiny lead. And though the peloton had a high enough pace to throw off
Pickup and
Davis, the leading duo worked to gain a near-comfy three minutes as the two crossed the Cipressa.
Steegmans thus appeared to be the only man for the sprint finish, but the peloton trailed by 3'20 with 17 km to go. Ivanov and
Fensome's odds were steadily decreasing, and the epic duel began.
Fensome taking the lead again
Fensome took the lead into the Poggio, but decided after a few hundred metres to let the Russian set the pace, before attacking from his wheel to gain a lead in the final kilometre of the Poggio.
Immediate success
Ivanov did not despair after
Fensome's early attack, pedalling steadily but losing 30 seconds up to the top, and Casson Dairy's hope had a solid lead as they began the mad descent into San Remo proper. It was, however, the Astaná veteran who wsa the better downhill rider. had his eye set on
Fensome's wheel, and the 30 seconds had dwindled to 10 when the two entered the final two kilometres.
Ivanov too close for comfort...
With
Fensome already tired after his early attack, he had no choice but to attempt a long sprint, which was hopelessly futile against Ivanov. A runner-up place in a classic is not bad, and Petacchi was denied the victory, but it still tastes sour after such a phenomenal piece of attacking work.
Russian-Kazakh victory
To add salt to the ruins,
Pickup crashed in the downhills, sustained a fractured skull and is unlikely to return until late May. The Giro is off, and it is hoped that he will be able to recover some form ahead of le Tour.
