Pietersen ftw.
I know he hasn't been around that long, but he seems to be able to adapt to all conditions and has the ability to take on all types of bowling, while mostly playing proper cricket shots.
Those you listed are all good players mind. Always thought Robin Smith a very good ODI player. I remember that innings he played in 93 when he scored 170-odd vs Australia, then England got run down.

Trescothick M.E.. this is the best english odi batsman based on the contributing avgs table..this is dated to 04 so it doesnt include pietersen

Rank....Name..........Ctry...inn..NO...Runs..SRT...AVG....Chnge...Combined/Avg/SRT/%
9...Trescothick.M.E...Eng...75...3...2700...86.1...37.50...+ 1.32...37.99
19..Knight N.V..........Eng...100.10..3636...71.5...40.40... -10.04..36.35

Im positive Peitersen would rank somewhere in this list.. but from the top 25 players these two are the best english players..knights average alone would rank higher than trescothick but when you combined the other two factors.. strike rate and contribution to team totals he pops up in the top 10.. which includes v.richards, c.gayle and d.jones.

Gooch and Lamb in the 70s\80s era, and Knight (followed closely by Hick and Fairbrother) in the 90s\00s one. Though Pietersen will almost certainly end-up far better than any of those three.
