Cricketer Of The Year
I guess I really think that if he plays tests for Australia, it will be as a batsman first and the bowling will be a bonus, so it's not too much of a problem. If nothing else, proving he can open might just edge him into the 'reserve batsman' spot on a tour and put him there to have the opportunity if someone's injured anywhere in the line-up.If he bats #6 for Australia then he generally won't be out there for too many overs, just enough to hit a quick 30* or so on most occasions. However, opening, the pressure will be placed upon him to bat through, since he doesn't score as quickly as the other batsmen in the line-up, and he could well spend a long time at the crease. If he bats for a long time and becomes fatigued, then Australia have a bowler who won't be as fresh as he should be.
But it's all a long way off, and looking at it from a Qld point of view, the move really seems to make sense. They're stacked with all-rounders in the middle and need someone to put their hand up at the top. That said, I don't understand why Maher had to move down, Watson and Maher together would seem far more sensible.
