***Official*** New Zealand in Australia

International Coach
Look at a couple of Australian posters circling the wagons. How predictable. Fact is, Tait has a weakness - which is his inaccuracy. McCullum obviously noted how wayward he was in the first few overs and has decided to put the pressure on a little more. Mind games are all part of international cricket - if Tait can't handle it (and we'll find out as the series goes on), perhaps he's not cut out for international cricket.

And what the hell is a valiant point, pup?
I meant valid, Volty just didn't come out right probably had a beer too many the last night, but seriously Tait only stated the obvious that Black caps have always struggled against pace (hell even Sami has had success against them), and as far Tait's waywardness is concerned he is always gonna bowl like that but he is also gonna get the team wickets and as Hayden said when somebody is bowling at 160k then that's a weakness Australia can live with.

I'm not saying that if a side bats second they're bound to win. Nor am I saying that if a side scores below a certain amount in the first innings they're bound to lose. The point that I'm trying to make is, the basic rules and structure of ODI cricket, and the way that teams generally go about playing gives an advantage to the side that bowls first. This is because its a batsmens game, and the side that bats second is generally better informed about the state of the pitch, the nature of the conditions, and how to go about their task. That doesn't mean they'll win 100% of the time. Each team is different. Each sides have different strengths and weaknesses. As a result they're each in a different position to take advantage of the formulaic nature of ODI's. If a side has decent bowlers, then the advantage to the side that bats first is marginalised and even reversed (as I've already stated). But for a side like New Zealand, who have a poor and largely indisciplined bowling lineup, this is not the case. And when they come up against a vastly superior outfit like Australia, they're only realistic chance of winning is to bowl first, try and keep the Australians to a gettable total and then chase it.
It may be a New Zealand thing

Providing the stats provided were correct New Zealand win 43.02% batting first compared to a 47.34% win rate batting second, not a huge difference but perhaps significant enough.

Australia's is the other way 65.21% batting first and 63.05% batting second, that differential being in effect probably negligible.

This study clearly needs more work for a scientific accuracy but I cant be stuffed right now.

As to the reason of a team with a bad bowling up chasing is better for them I don’t agree, but I cant deny that New Zealand certainly have based tactics around chasing in recent years and it has worked.

Having a look at the stats for every side in the world over the course of their last 80 matches, came up with the following stats

Country % won batting first % won batting second
India 41 67
Australia 69 79
South Africa 64 74
England 42 51
Pakistan 50 58
New Zealand 56 60
Sri Lanka 55 56
West Indies 47 48

Now I realise that the statistical analysis going into this is pretty thin, and that this doesn't take into account matches against the minnows, but there does seem to be a general trend favouring sides that bat second, in recent years.

There. Of course what this proves above all else is that I have far too much time on my hands.

LOL at the Aussies painting up Tait as an unattackable figure.

We aren't scared of pace, we faced him all last year and played him fine. He's not much, just a quicker Ian Butler, I rate Steyn, Lee and Bond far far higher. We struggle against pace on minefields, just like any other nation. McCullum has every right to say what he thinks, he made Tait look like a schoolboy but then I forget that only Aussies are able to criticize anyone. I'd say more but I'm off to watch the cricket.

Well we can say whatever we like about what to do first when winning the toss but its the skippers that count and Dan Vettori votes again bat first.

Look, I know Hopkins' sister and she's a nice burd, but honestly - Hopkins, why???????

Sinclair performed a new role admirably in South Africa, has one chance in Aussie and gets discarded? More Bracewell favourites.

Really hope Vincent scores a 50 here. Otherwise he'll get dropped and recalled in a few years. Just a bad patch - he'll come out of it I swear!

Couldn't agree more, but why bat Sinclair at 7 in the first place? I would have personally dropped How and put Sinclair in at 3 which would have made far more sense IMO.

How about Bracewell and selectors actually pick players for their position for a change!

Why does Vincent keep opening. FFS.

Also, Lee is getting gunner each game. He is bowling with the best control I have seen him bowl in his entire career right now and getting better.
