Oh mate....I dunno....he's already been given the chance and was pretty dire. Let's pick some younger guys eh?
Lots of batsmen start off crap and turn out good. We seem to discard openers too quickly here. Horne and Spearman being prime examples. Bells improved his technique according to commentators so I'd give him a shot if he continues this until we play the bangers.

Fair call.. he can't do any worse than Papps. It would be a negative call though. Might as well call back Bruce Edgar

We should have been proactive and cloned him when he was in his prime then done a bit of plastic surgery and hey presto! We have an opener. I swear Australia cloned McGrath, they called the clone Stuart Clark.

Mate, if you could clone Edgar, Wright and Turner you would have a pretty good player.
McGrath bored the tears out of me his entire career..... sorry Aussies

We need a Cairns-Oram hybrid. That would be something. Shane Bond mixed with someone unbreakable would be good too. Screw the academy lets ust clone people for the spots we're weak in.

In other words the greatest cricketer ever?

I reckon Bruce Taylor would have a good shot at beating Cairns for the allrounder spot in an all time XI TBH. Bloody good allrounder.

Huge call Flem. Taylor was good but C.Cairns is all over him......so's J.R.Reid tbh

He's completely changed his technique - when he had his previous chances, he was taking too much advice from too many people.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
He certainly has been in the runs and given our current opening woes, could he be the person to partner Cumming versus Bangladesh? If Voltman is right and he has changed his technique then IMO he deserves a chance.

I'll pretty cynical about Bell getting another chance. I've never thought he's really got the stones to play international cricket well. I'm glad to see him scoring big for Wellington though and not "Doing a Spearman" and ****ing off to Eng-er-land.

In other news, good to see Houghton scoring 81 against CD... Though it does sound like it was played on a typical McLean Park expressway.

OK. You've almost sold me. Mind you, I'm open to any suggestion

Yeah just looked up his stats. I reckon he'd make the side if we didn't play a spinner, he was a hell of a bowler and would be more effective than our best spinner Vettori.

Tayl's was a super player. We weren't blessed with too many at that point in time though

I don't see any reason necessarily why Bell shouldn't be selected if the situation calls for it. There are plenty of players who've struggled in international cricket in their early years, spent ages in first class cricket, and then returned to be highly competent players, Matthew Hayden being an obvious example. Not necessarily saying that Bell would succeed, but if he's stopped mucking around with his technique, and our opening problems continue, I see no reason why he should't be given another shot. His form has been excellent for the last couple of seasons and he's been playing plenty of fast scoring, exciting innings. He's also looking likely to break Papps' run scoring record from last season. With a minimum of 4 (and probably 5 considering how well Wellington are doing in the comp this season) games remaining this season, you'd have to back him to the score the less than 300 he needs. Still, Papps and (especially) Cumming deserve a game or two more yet, and after them, Jamie How is probably the next cab off the rank, so I'd be somewhat surprised if we saw Bell in a Black Cap this season.
