i must say this really kicked the **** out of the test cricket played today (bar the start of Indias innings i suppose)

where batsmen easily accounted for bowlers on slowish wickets

isnt it ironic that if a foreigner watched cricket today and u asked em which game was the batsmen friendly one they'd prolly pick the two test matches today over todays 2020.. of coruse the pitch played a role

This really was poor, Aussie may be better than us but not by that much. The only positives were Oram's batting and Patel showing once again he should be in this team full time but once again he will be ignored for someone dire like Mason or god forbid, Martin.
.
nah Patel will play... if he doesnt play in Adelaide he wont play any games on the other wickets IMO...

but this match today wont mean that much...agreed with the kiwi commentator the only thing that is imp. was the psychological factor of our quicks vs there batsmen (top order)

but we wont play Tait i reckon... and the pitch in adelaide will prolly be slowish...which will be good for Vettori/Patel

if NZ win the toss and bat and get 250+ it will be tough to chase i recn

Got to love the depth of Australian Cricket when you can call up a relatively random state player an hour before the match, and he hits 15 off 7 in a 32 runs off 18 ball partnership.

dont get your knickers in a twist because he beat the **** out of your team
I'm not doing that at all. I've already said well done to your team in a previous post. Its your stupid, arrogant, trollish posts that really piss me off.

Well that was a fantastic game. I loved seeing the debutants play.

But most of all, I really really really enjoyed seeing the ball that jagged back, cut the kiwi in half and not even Gilly could get a glove to it. That was the first time in years that I've seen a bowler cut a batsman in two like that. I must say that I very much enjoyed Australia's bowling lineup - reminded me of the WIndies in their prime. We should go with that bowling lineup into the test (with Clark instead of Bracken).

Brett Lee in particular was fantastic in his opening spell. I don't think I've ever seen him bowl better. This is what we have been missing for the last seven years in international cricket - fearsome fast bowling. Love it!

EDIT: Really happy for the Pom Basher and Vogues. Exceptionally happy that Noffers got 3 wickets (even though Lee was our best bowler)!

What a surprise, another top order failure and another loss.

Jamie How is not a 20/20 player so why was he playing?

Lou Vincent and Ross Taylor are playing awfully for a while now. Moan and whine about Taylor's talent all you want, I'd rather have results than a waste of batting space. Get Peter Fulton over there now. .
Taylor copped a great ball and Vincent was trying to start offensively chasing a large score.

While I accept you have seen more of Taylor than I what I have seen leads me to believe he must be in the team as the talent is there and it needs developing and as no one else looks like developing at the moment give him an extended chance.

Is Fulton available to play? Because if he is i am surprised he is not on the trip.

While I rarely read insights into twenty20 for any other form the lack of ability to handle the hot pace bowling from Australia from the upper order is more than a concern and the main reason I think were in for a one sided tour.

Fulton just scored 100 in a FC game.

Did I leave the pace out of my post? My mistake that is a big factor. We've been hot and cold against extreme pace. We took Tait and Lee apart on a few occassions last summer but on others we were awful. Alot of this is to do with how well the bowler bowls but really when they're on target we need to learn how to baton down the hatches as there are only a few players (McCullum, Fulton, Oram) in the one day squad capable of attacking pace successfully.

We have alot of middle order depth so I'd move How up to open and have Fulton over there and Taylor in the squad as cover. If someone goes down we'd have to look at Broom because he's a good player and IIRC is now old enough to have a shot at the top level. I'd rather him than James bloody Marshall.

Jeeves.

Well that was expected so no need to moan about it. Our three openers got demolished due to some great bowling that we had no answers too. Symonds gave us a total we had too much trouble chasing against their quicks, simple as that.

How about Patel and Taylor in the field today? Jeez, great effort, I mistook us for Australia in the field for a second!

Our 5th bowler (Styris + Oram) conceded 46 runs for 0.

I kind of have to blame Vettori a little for Patel going at 40 runs, he bowled him in two spells, 6th and 8th (7+W,5) and 14th and 16th (14, 9+W ) the second spell being when Symonds was well set.

Vettori having to bowl Oram and Styris in that period just to get through the overs I feel, Patel always seems to have to bowl in uncomfortable phases for some of the shortcomings the injury stricken side has. If Franklin or Bond was playing this wouldn't be a problem.

Mills thru 4
Bond 2 and then death
Jeeves and Vettori middle
Gillespie last 4
If Franklin was in the team in place of Gillespie you may want him to have a few early on and only 2 at the end.

Too much Taylor bashing for me, Pig's been just as dire usually.

On todays evidence if we were to pick 4 quicks against India in Melbourne, I would prefer to see Noffke play than Tait, I know it wont happen because he is very similar to Stuart Clark, however I'm very impressed with him atm.

It's only a 20/20 match so figures wont always tell the full story, but I think Noffke's fundamentals were great today, he bowled a perfect line, had absolutely perfect seam position and he was nippy (although alongside Tait, Lee and Johnson he looked very medium pace),
Tait was quick (although not as quick as he can be I felt, they werent showing the speeds but I got the feeling Lee was a wee bit quicker, whereas when he's 100% Tait is a yard sharper than Lee), had better control than usual, swung the ball at times and a few of his short balls had real venom in them, however he just seemed to be lacking polish to me, alot of half volleys sent down and I feel like he got lucky, on another night could have had 0-40.

Funny what happened with Pomerbach, I wasnt awfully impressed with him tbh, first time I've actually seen him interviewed and he didnt seem very proffesional. I have no doubt he has a huge amount of talent, however he dosent strike me as someone who has the drive and work-ethic to really refine his game. Like I reckon during the week he dosent give cricket alot of though, just hangs out with his mates, gets on the piss and chases girls around, whereas someone like Voges you can just tell he has that competitive edge and proffesionalism and will do anything possible to get ahead of the que. Would love PB to prove me wrong but thats just my early impressions.

I only watched the Aussie innings cause I had to get to work..

What a great story about Pomersbach, which has surely been talked about, but yeah Congrats to him, he was definitely at the right place at the right time!

Symonds innings was good to watch, and NZ fielding was great. Thought Taylor's was catch with Symonds.

lol. he went to the game to watch some of australia's best cricketers with his girlfriend, a couple of hours later he finds himself padded up on the side lines about to go out and bat for his country. he seemed quite nervous, and deservedly so. plus, it was probably his first ever television interview. you can't really make assumptions on his life and how seriously he takes cricket on one television interview.

Yeah I agree exactly with this post.

He's in a relaxed mood then suddenly he gets called up to play for Australia which has probably been his dream for the past 10 - 15 years in his life. Even if it's a Twenty20 match it's still representing the country in front of big audiences.

He hit a nice 6, I thought he looked as solid as Voges to be honest. Voges did run well between the wickets though.

Hmm not a great start to the defending the Chappell-Hadlee.

Lee and Tait were simply unplayable for large portions of their spells, and Bracken, Johnson and Noffke weren't exactly bowling bad either. Thank goodness for Jacob Oram, who saved us from being bowled out for about 70!

As far as I'm concerned we stand no chance in the three ODIs, but I will watch anyway in hope that we can pull off something of similar nature to last February. I still don't think McCullum's best position is opening, but if we stand any chance he must fire in at least two of the matches. Good to see Oram in great form but I wouldn't want to have him walking out at 5/31 too often again over the next week!

The coverage IMO was great, with the onfield commentary; perhaps something the World Cup could've had, even if the captain gave a report on how things were going after 10 overs or every 5 overs, etc. Did they say that Ross Taylor was wired up as well? Don't think that fell through. Gilchrist will surely be part of the commentary team once he hangs up the gloves, while Symonds was reasonably entertaining as well.

And regarding this comment:
20/20 is such a shocking game. tonight's match is the first 20/20 i've sat down and watched (refused to watch the 20/20 circus cup) and i'm really not impressed. while it's all good for families and people without cricketing brains, it doesn't favour people who like watching traditional cricket.

give me a michael vaughan hundred of two hundred and eighty deliveries over a symonds fifty off 20 deliveries any day of the week.
I wasn't entirely convinced about Twenty20 when it first arrived but after actually going to the matches I changed my tune. The atmosphere at those matches was far better than any ODI, and the fact that it brings new spectators, not only in age but also gender can only be good for the game. Players are more active, spectators get more value for money, and its hardly going to affect the amount of test cricket played so the purists will still have their game. I watched most of the 20-20 World Cup and it was thoroughly entertaining, as even the one sided affairs were over within a short space of time. Its here to stay and I'd advise you to get used to the game!

Yeah I know I was a bit harsh, but that combined with the poor disciplinary record (hasnt he gotten in trouble for similar things everyone of the past 3 seasons?) just give me that impression, and thats all it is, a first impression, would love to be proven wrong.

That'll definitely be in one of the Cricinfo "Late call-ups" or "Most unexpected players" XIs that they often do pretty soon I'd say. Pretty humorous, though he looked the part at the crease.
