Interesting three years down the track and A-League has started bringing back Socceroos and a large percentage of overseas based players. But its seems like the A-League has just hit niche of mainly die hard football fans who majority supported the NSL anyway.
I wonder how many new fans have really come on board to the A-League who weren't Football fans to start off with. Just get the feeling that the A-League is going down the same path as NBL, with a niche following that will keep it a float and never really expand.
It was probably unrealistic to ever expect it to complete with the AFL or NRL. But it is surprising to me how quickly it levelled out and stop growing in support.
One interesting sign is how quickly the bandwagon support came for Sydney and Melbourne when they were winning and how quickly it dropped off as well.
Will be interesting to see the development in the league over the next couple seasons. I'm not sure how much longer they can keep saying no to a youth league, especially when you look at some of poor U17s and U20s results.
Also after the saga that was Aloisi and Elrich signings they probably need to look at expanding the salary cap. Its so stupid when a players want to take a cut to come home, four clubs want him, but no one can fit him under the salary cap unless they cut 2-3 players. Also the fact that none of clubs have a full roster of registered players, also say something about the salary cap.
