Butler and Pickup show the way
1st ODI - Cricket Web XI vs England
Scorecard
Ball by Ball
Neil Pickup grabbed three top order wickets, allowing his team to beat England fairly convincingly by 22 runs at Lord's. Cricket Web XI continued their dominance over England in this series, as the hosts stumbled in the chase of 278 after choosing to field first.
The England bowlers struggled to make use of friendly conditions. The start was promising, however, and moist conditions encouraged the seamers early on. It was a loosely executed pull shot that accounted for Ash Chaulk, the opener clattering a short ball to Stuart Broad at mid-on. Andrew Cloete and James Stedman proceeded to struggle against the seamers, who grew in confidence.
The first boundary came only in the 9th over, and Stedman followed up that initiative with a cracking shot over midwicket for six. The innings surged forward through that shift of confidence, though Cloete was stunningly caught for 29. Chris Butler played the crucial hand in the middle order, playing an up-tempo and counter-attacking knock in the middle overs. His was 69 from 56 balls, featuring 10 boundaries despite the slow, wet outfield.
Stedman (49) was caught in the deep off Anderson, allowing Rob Dauth to play himself in with a busy 45. The wickets clattered toward the end of the innings, but again Alex Crampton showed his worth with a fine hand of 46 in structuring 277 all out. Broad finished with 4 for 48 through determined bowling and variation.
Like their counterparts, England got off to a sluggish and careful start. By the end of the 16th over, England had not lost a wicket but had only 64 runs on the board. The proverbial something gave when Alastair Cook slashed at Camps and was smartly held at cover point by Clapham. Ian Bell announced himself with a hook shot that sailed for six and England looked determined to elevate their challenge.
That shift in approach became their undoing, however, as debutant Taylor (34) charged past a straight delivery from Pickup to be stumped. Pickup had an lbw shout turned down against Pietersen first ball, then the England talisman flicked a delivery through midwicket for four. He and Bell conspired the take 18 off the following over from Camps and the contest looked truly alive. Pietersen had gotten to 6 and then poorly skied a slog sweep to the deep. Clapham ran around and held a comfortable catch.
The pace of the innings slowed again until Bell lashed out in frustration and edged Pickup to slip. The required run rate was wel over 6, so Paul Collingwood attempted to accelerate with consecutive boundaries off Tom Halsey. But there was no consistency in attack and no further boundaries for another 7 overs, when Collingwood met Pickup with the same fate. The medium pace of Chris Butler dislodged Shah for 21, then Gough returned to bowl Collingwood (43) with a full length delivery.
England required 99 runs from the final 77 deliveries, and with only Matt Prior among the recognized batsmen, it seemed a comfortable finale for the Cricket Web XI. England finally got on top of Butler with 14 runs from the 47th over, but the game was all but won at the dismissal of Broad to start the 48th. Ryan Sidebottom gathered two boundaries off the final over from Gough, but Cricket Web XI were clear by 22 runs.
