Used to rate Lara higher because I'd never seen Tendulkar bat, but now I'm not sure.

How long have you been watching the game?
I've been watching it seriously since the 2005 Ashes. Prior to that I'd only really watch it if there wasn't much else on the TV, or I was at my uncles. My earliest solid memory of cricket was Ponting scoring 200 against Pakistan and Gilchrist scoring a century in the same way.

Explains a lot about some of your views on the game tbh. You'll probably take that the wrong way, I'm sure

I am amazed at some of you who think Lara is way better then Sachin.

To me, Sachin is slightly superior. Here are my reasons.

Some basic stats...

ODI

avg/strike rate
Sachin- 44.33/85.55

Brian-40.48/79.51

Now Sachin has clear edge in both departments. One can argue that Lara's strikerate is low b/c he comes later then Sachin. Valid point and point taken.
But Sachin has 4 point higher avrg. Usually u have lower avrg for top order batsman b.c bowl swings much more in the early on. Also, you have a pressure of setting up the stage for up coming batmen. On the counterside, you have only few fielders in the begining so that certainly helps for stroke players, where as in middle overs boundaries are harder to come but pitch becomes slower and single/double becomes easier. Player usually need to take less risks in middle overs

but all in all, for me, I would give an edge to a batman who comes early into game then someone who comes later. So Sachin gets my vote here.

Lara avg at home-44.1
Lara avg away-37.8

Sachin avg at home-46.12
Sachin avg away-35.7

Now sachin loves playing against home crowd but consitancy everywhere is more important. So Lara gets the edge.

avg when Team won

Lara-61
Sachin-56

avg when team lost
Lara-25
Sachin-33

Lara contributes more when his teams wins then sachin but sachin stays more consitant on his wicket then lara when other players are getting out. IMO, this stats sort of cancel eachother out.

Now in test

Sachin avg-54.53
Lara avg-52.88

Slight edge but certainly not big deal.
Lara is more concentrated where he can stay stuck on the crease while sachin is more of consitant player. What is more important? Consistancy.

Lara's average when he scored b/w 0-150 = 37
Sachin's = 43.
considerable difference, but not a huge stat to fall on.

Lara''s avg at home-58.65
Lara's avg away-47.8

Sachin's home avg-55.26
Sachin's away avg-54.67

Sachin is terribly close to his stats then Lara.

avg when team won

Lara-61
Sachin-64

avg when team lost

Lara-42
Sachin-36

avg when game drawn

Lara-71
Sachin-69

Sachin does better when team wins, but he doesnt do quite as good as Lara when team looses. So I think they are very close in this department. Their avg when game drawn are not big deal and also they are close.

Bowling-

Lara is not a bowler.
Sachin-ODI-154 wickets
Test-42 wickets

sachin is obviously part time bowler but another dimention in your cricket resume is quite important even just as a batsman. So sachin has significant edge in bowling departments.

Now some might say Sachin has played around good batsman like Ganguly, Dravid, Azar but Lara also has played with some decent batsmans to share his load. I think the avg when team won/loss avg may summarize this point better. Some might say sachin has been less clutch then Lara but I think is hard to figure. So the stat of win/loss avg summerize this much better. Some might say sachin has played under some fierce indian fan pressure but one can also argue that playing against your own fans might help. So either or, this is hard to judge and it sort of cancels out eachother.

Milestones- well, centuries, 50ies, total runs, games played...

I am not going to explain much here b.c to me teamwork is more important. Though, Sachin has considerable edge here.

Sachin has been playin when he was 16 where as Lara started when he was 20. So Sachin has shown more resistance.

All in all, i think sachin is little better, though obviously Lara is very close candidate. I love watching both players but I like to watch sachin more b.c he is righty and I am rightly :)

Obviously not everything can be included so more stats and/or opinions will be welcomed. Atleast at this moment I think Sachin holds the edge.
