Vettori doesn't do too well when he's playing away from home either, averaging 37.86 (Bangladesh stats removed). You would think that he would perform in subcontinental conditions, being more conducive to spin-bowling, but an average of 40 against Test class sides is quite telling.

It's true that Vettori's average isn't all that bad when compared to other spinners we have produced, but there is one major difference between Vettori and the likes of Alabaster, Boock, H. Howart and Bracewell. All of those bowlers have FC bowling averages in the low-mid twenties, whereas Vettori's is around 32. Not all that impressive.
That can easily be explained by the fact that 61% of Vettori's 1st-class games have actually been tests. Compare that to Howarth's 21%, Alabaster's 15%, Bracewell's 27.5% and Boock's 18%.

I wouldn't mind Patel coming ahead of Vettori in test selection but it is highly unlikely to ever happen and Patel will be the most under utilised bowler we've ever produced.

Vettori is a class act in ODIs though. He's also our second best test batsman sadly ATM.

I'm apalled that Martin is playing tonight. Anyone know who he's coming in ahead of?

Why? He has bowled well on this tour.

Why? He's been the best bowler v SA on the tour
A. he's only good on greentops in ODI's

B. he can't bat and with our top allrounder gone we kind of need people that can at least block

C. Who does he deserve to come ahead of out of:

Mills
Vettori
Patel
Gillespie
Mason
O'Brien

Only O'Brien.

P.S. Fiery where's ya cricket diary thing gone that I saw earlier?

His FC average, excluding Tests, is 28.48. Still a good 3-5 points above the bowlers you mentioned earlier.

Mason>Martin.
Very debatable imo. You have to pick players on form most of the time and Martin's form has been good on this tour. Perhaps this should be his last chance to perform in ODIs if he fails, however. I have no qualms about his selection for this game though tbh

Think they should at least take the pitch into account. if its green, then the poor mans Franklin can bowl. Anything else, pick Mason.

Bradley Scott would be>>Both

He's a fair bit worse than Michael Mason, IMO, and not that much better than O'Brien in limited overs cricket.
Sure, he hasn't bowled well in the limited opportunities he has had in ODI's but I don't think you can really judge a player properly after just 9 games.

There is a good reason he's had limited opportunities in ODI cricket, and it's because he's a poor bowler who can go for heaps of runs and possesses virtually no variations. He's only really bowled well in a couple of those games, and the other times he has been absolutely terrible. You can't judge him properly, but you can get a fair idea of how good he is.

Fair enough comments. Hope he proves you wrong and bowls really well in this series though
