With both teams getting off to a similar start, there was one man who made a difference- Shahid Afridi. He batted sensibly, used all his power to good effect, built upon a good cushion and dealt the knockout blow. We couldn't see this happen when the Indians were in the same situation, as wickets fell in a heap after the exit of Tendulkar and Gambhir, with runs scored with difficulty.
The seventh batsman has failed. We don't know what Robin Uthappa was doing at that position. He doesn't bowl. He had little to do on the field. When needed most, he was out for no score. Likewise Virendra Sehwag, who scored 23 at a strike rate under 80. Even Ganguly, still opening, was out in the very first over bowled by Shoaib Akhtar- a strike bowler that matters. Clearly, a fifth bowler could have played in place of one of these?
Pakistan, on the other hand, had fewer batsmen (in fact, three less), but still scored more runs. The fifth and sixth bowling option in that team helped, providing good support to the frontline bowlers on a batting-friendly pitch. In comparison, the Indian filler bowlers just went through the motions and the batsmen calmly built partnerships when Ganguly bowled and smashed Tendulkar in one over.
The absence of Praveen Kumar could have been a factor. He had the hitting power that is missing in the middle-order, and would do a far better job than Ganguly and Tendulkar with the ball. It's not about filling overs. It's about getting wickets. Why the fifth bowler, even Zaheer, a frontline bowler for India, has looked inadequate, and may end up losing his place to the faster Sreesanth or Praveen.
Positives for India? A few. With just four bowlers, they ran the Pakistanis close. Gautam Gambhir looked just right to open for India in ODI's. Tendulkar was in good touch again. Dhoni's 'keeping has been very good. The four-man bowling combination did rather well, despite Zaheer being off colour.
The negatives, however, were shown up here. Maybe next time, we'll see five regular bowlers again. Maybe next time, we'll see a new opening combination. Maybe next time, we'll see a different strike bowler. Maybe next time, we'll see better bowling changes. Maybe next time, we'll see better final-overs batting and bowling.
