All the Manou bashers getting some. 99* at the end of the day, building two big partnerships with Harris (60) and Gillespie (48*) to get S.A. to 303. Geeves gets 5 for Tassie. Not a bad bowler, bowled very well when I saw him bowl against Queensland a couple of weeks ago.

Ryan Harris for the Australian All Rounder position. Scored some decent runs lately.

Unless Tait or Hilf do something special in this Pura Cup match. I reckon it wouldn't surprise me if Noffke gets a call up. He would give the bowling attack decent balance, with another stock bowler. Hogg turned it on just at the right time. MacGill from all reports didn't look very fit when he bowled, just going through the motions with no zip. Not sure how much the selectors with take that into account considering Hogg's current form.

Don't think Noffke would be a bad pick tbh. He's certainly been in fine form.

Interesting arvo of cricket. Bracken and Clark bowled extremely well, both got the batsmen playing and missing a lot. Simpson and Noffke P&M about five of their first fifteen balls each and then went on to score big, was so frustrating. They got extremely lucky early on, but then settled down and bashed it. Lee looked very hittable all afternoon. And I'm not going to comment on MacGill, because no-one wants to hear it. Yuck.

In saying this, I don't think you can really read too much into Johnson and Lee's figures. By all means praise the great bowling by Clark, Noffke and Bracken, but Lee and Johnson were puting a lot into it and getting nothing back through little fault of their own. Maybe. :p

For the little I saw of Jaques, I liked. He hit an insane six over third-man which was just incredible. Cowan is a gun aswell.

Jaques sounds like a high risk player.. likes to chance his arm.. im guessing he'll play like this in the tests too..wish him the best!

He is very much a high risk player, and I think that gives Katich a shot at selection.

I know Jaques has done everything right and logically he deserves it, but this selection panel has already shown a tendancy to throw the form book out the window as regards who 'should' be picked and who 'deserves' it and simply pick what their gut tells them is the best Australian team. eg dropping Hodge for Martyn two games after his 200, picking Voges from nowhere ahead of several more established candidates when Martyn retired.

And Katich is dependable, reliable, they know what they are going to get, and they know he's a better player than his test stats tell you. Jaques on the other hand is a flashier, riskier, potentially brilliant but more prone to failure sort of player. The team is in a period of change and Sri Lanka has a handy seam attack, stability rather than flashiness may seem more attractive.

Dont count Katich out...I dont think it will happen, but I wouldnt be suprised if it did.

To be fair, they were only batting for about ten overs. But I guess in comparison to other players, Jaques plays his shots more often, yes.

i actually agree about Katich

our current team has a lot of aggressive players but not enough 'rock' type players anyway..

his running between wickets really is horrible though

Hogg should be in serious contention to make it to the test side now, MacGill did his chances a lot of harm by playing through with an obvious injury, he bowled pretty badly and his bowling figures in the recent match weren't the one's you expect of Australia's no.1 spin bowler 8-).
MacGill doesn't have much going for him atm, his hot-headed nature and temperament have always been under the scanner and now his form and fitness are also looking below par, so i don't how wise it would be expect MacGill to last till Ashes 09.

If you are going by straight results from the recent Pura Cup games then neither MacGill or Lee would be picked and Clark, Noffke, Hogg would be picked, but although all a worthy it's not likely to happen. MacGill would be very unlucky not to play given his test record and he has proven before even when he is not bowling well domestically he knows when to stand up. As Ponting said in the paper when really pressured sometimes McGrath were not perform at his best, but that is when MacGill really stands up, which is why he wants him in the team.

I think MacGill, Lee & Clark were always selected before this round and Johnson was all but picked. If Tait puts in a big one against Tasmania he will probably get a start at the 'Gabba and if Jaques hadn't have notched 167 against W.A. then Katich might have snuck in ahead of him. I think the test team was picked before the weekend with only the 3rd seamer role any real chance of a selection battle.
