All Time Test XI

shortpitched713

International Captain
Off the top of my head:

Gavaskar
Hobbs
Bradman
Tendulkar
Lara
Sobers
Gilchrist+
Imran*
Warne
Murali
McGrath

Hadlee in for Warne if its a grassy pitch. Missing a lot of old time greats, it would seem. Baah, they were all overrated amatuers anyways.

Cricketer Of The Year
1. Jack Hobbs
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Ricky Ponting*
4. Sir Don Bradman
5. Mohammad Yousuf
6. Sir Garfield Sobers
7. Kumar Sangakkara+
8. Sir Richard Hadlee
9. Dennis Lillee
10. Muttiah Muralitharan
11. Glenn Mcgrath

Perhaps lacking a tearaway pace option, for whom I considered Andy Roberts or Waqar Younis but I put Hadlee in simply because of his genius or the natural attribute of pace which he always posssessed and the stats don't lie; 431 wickets at 22.29 is superb and more than a handy batsman too. I feel that, if paired together, Lillee and Mcgrath could have paired outswing with seam movement, speed through the air with bounce perfectly.

Sangakkara is my choice of keeper simply because I feel he is the best test match wicketkeeper batsman of all time as I noted in that thread.

Ricky Ponting at three and as skipper. His record as skipper does not lie and he is just a run machine. Speaking of which, Mohammad Yousuf at five is sure to raise eyebrows but I feel that the conversion has given him some sort of mental clarity. 2369 runs at 84.60 since September 2005 which is when he announced his conversion. That is simply extraordinary. He will never be a great ODI batsman but I feel that he could very well break a few records in 2008 much like he did in 2006. Before I thought of Yousuf, I was going to have Graeme Pollock in the team at five.

Hayden? He couldn't handle Shoaib, Flintoff and Simon Jones. I would like to see him handle Garner, Holding, Roberts and the rest...

Miller above Sobers, eh? Might be pushing it TBH. And I would rather have a guy who played barely any Tests (Barry Richards) over Hayden tbh.

Those knocks tend to flatter him actually. He was second-best against Shoaib on bouncy Aussie wickets in 2004, and when Jones and Flintoff were actually on radar in 2005, he was at sea. Also, he struggled to find a place in the side in the 90s when pace bowling attacks were significantly better than today. When the bowling tends to be less potent or off song, Hayden ends up looking good. When the pacers are top notch and in-form, he's not as impressive. A generalization, of course, but I'm not convinced he can topple the pacers of the 70s and 80s.

Ask the reason, I'll tell you ;).

Miller mostly batted at #5 and Sobers normally at #6.

Richards over Hayden? People tend to rate Richards as one of, if not the, greatest opener ever. But considering he didn't have much of a test career I can't in good conscious rate him over Hayden or any other great opener who have had great test careers.

Yeah, Gavaskar was also troubled at times; as was Hobbs; and I'm sure too as all great batsmen were and will be. What's important is getting on top more times than not. He's hammered guys like McGrath, Warne, Murali and Wasim, why not those guys?
