I cant stand him. I if I cant find the remote when some one swittches on a channel with him on, the TV is in a big danger of being damaged by a piece of furniture thrown at it :)
He is too loud, too full of himself, too rude to everyone around him, too opinionated.

If he wasn't all that, I must tell you he would make a damn good cricket expert because he knows more about the game than some of our more celeberated former 'greats'. But he just wont stop playing to the gallery and the more 'idiots' he adds to his fan club (sorry not commenting about you) the more he seems to think this is what is needed from him as a commentator.

He needs to stick only to cricket, tone down his voice, allow others to get a word in edgeways, remember that its about the game and not him and he will be pretty good.

Agreed but feel a bit less critical of him personally, he is a little OTT.

Pommie has been a revelation. I hope he gets more exposure on TV and radio, not just being brought in when Zimbabwe are playing, because he doesn't deserve that.

Battle Twelve

David Gower vs Jack Bannister vs Jim Laker

A very British looking round for you this time...

David Gower
Playing Career: An elegant left-handed batsman who enjoyed a successful test career for England in the 1980s.
Commentating Pedigree: Made the jump into commentary soon after his playing retirement, becoming an anchorman for Sky Sports' cricket commentary.
Other: * Took a short trip in a Tiger Moth airplane during a warm up game on a tour to Australia
* A team captain on BBC quiz show "They Think Its All Over" until he realised it was getting crap and jumped ship.
* Advocate for African Wildlife

Jack Bannister
Playing Career: Had a long successful first class bowling career for Warwickshire
Commentating Pedigree: Was for many years a key component of the BBC's tv commentary, often presenting county cricket matches and commentating on test matches. More recently moved to TALKSport
Other: * Promised to eat cardboard if South Africa won a test match back in 1995. He did.

Jim Laker
Playing Career: A successful off-spinner for England, mainly in the 1950s. Famous for taking 19 wickets in one test match in the 4th Ashes test at Old Trafford in 1956.
Commentating Pedigree: A regular in the BBC television commentary box after his retirement. Considered an outspoken, but fair commentator. His habit of dropping 'g's was often imitated.
Other: * Offended the MCC so much with his book Over to Me that they withdrew his honourary membership

I think you may be in a minority on this one again, sadly. I've just remembered who Trevor Bailey's up against in this round, and I don't think the results are going to be too pretty for him either.
Nothing new:laugh: Apart from Benaud the old ones might have trouble:-O

Richie's just lucky he's still commentating - even he'd be on his way out if he'd retired any more than a few years ago. :(

I'd love to have a commentary team of the blokes who've already been eliminated.

Can't honestly recall Laker making much of an impression on me as a kid. I do like Bannister a lot tho, has an earthy, black country accent that lends his words an ex-pro's weight of opinion. Gower's an admirable host and a good conduit for teasing out the opinions of others, but rarely seems to commentate on games nowadays.

On balance: for Bannister.

As a semi-related aside, who was the bald chap who hosted the BBC's test coverage before Tony Lewis took over? Can't recall his name for the life of me.

You might like the next battle though, archie. Keep looking out for that one.

Yes, would be worth listening to with no pictures:cool:

Here is a quick trivia question for you, "What do you think Arthur?" who is asking and who is he talking too?
