Battle Three

Tony Cozier vs Alan McGilvray

Tony Cozier

Playing Career: None to speak of. He played club cricket in Barbados and played Hockey for their National Team.
Commentating Pedigree: He has been a cricket writer and a voice synonymous with West Indian cricket since 1958. He debuted in radio commentary during the West Indies vs Australia series in 1965. He has since been a regular on the BBC's test match special team and in the commentary box for Sky Sports.
Other: * Author of the definitive history of West Indian cricket

Alan McGilvray

Playing Career: Played first class cricket for New South Wales in the 1930s.
Commentating Pedigree: The voice of Australian cricket for nearly 50 years, starting in 1938 and ending with a farewell speech from Bob Hawke and a standing ovation from the SCG crowd in 1985.
Other: * Upon his retirement, moved into writing and wrote a number of books from his retirement until his death in 1996.
* Pioneered commentary using written descriptions of play from England and embellishing the descriptions with sound effects and extra descriptions to make it sound if he was at the game to the listener.

McGilvray was a pioneer but unfortunately with this type of thing, the fact that I never heard him and that he is up against a 'big' name means that my vote goes to Cozier.

Maybe a little unfair but oh well.

McGilvray was the Grace of Australian Cricket broadcasting. (Benaud being the Bradman). Can't stand Cozier either.

Never heard the other guy, and I quite like Tony Cozier. Not the best analytical commentator, but a good one who entertains listeners while still being very knowledgeable.

For: Cozier

Alan McGilvray.

Harsh that either of these two have to go out in the first round - both deserve better IMO.

Cozier isn't really a commentator he doesn't have that much to offer. He's more of a post match presenter than anything else.

Alan McGilvray on the other hand was a pioneer and great commentator.
