I hope this doesn't become a repeat of the 2000 african tour. Whats the bet Bracewell will now try Taylor at no.3?
I hope not, Fleming should be at #3 and Vincent at #4. There is no way Taylor should be ahead of Vincent, but I have a feeling he will be.

Agreed. Isn't it great to have so much confidence in our beloved caoch?

The team I would pick:

Craig Cumming

Nothing special but he he is consistent. Earned his place in the two match series against Sri Lanka. Reliable batsman to have at the top of the order. He would face first ball to protect the better batsman.

Michael Papps

No brainer really. Huge runscorer domestically and should have been in the side for a few years now if we didn't have such a fool of a coach. His average is disappointing but he has had limited opporttunities. Impressive average of 51 in ODI's and I hope to see him play in them as well. It would be great to see him convert his domestic record into international runs.

Stephen Fleming

I am concerned that he will have to come in early to face the new ball which he is very weak against. However with our first choice first drop out we have no choice. In spectacular CC form and I genuinely believe he's going to have a good trip in SA.

Lou Vincent

Labelled a dirty slogger by some, Lou Vincent has inexplicably been made to open in tests despite being a number four batsman. In the limited games we have seen him play at four he has produced some sparkling innings which hopefully he can repeat during this series.

Scott Styris

Obvious selection. He is a genuine mister do-it-all. Styris will provide some much needed consistency and solidity to the middle order.

Ross Taylor

I like having a specialist batsman at 6. Oram, whatever bracewell may think, does not have the technique or skill required to play at number six. Whilst Taylor is unproven, he can bat ferociously and being buried down the order will hopefully hide his flaws against swing and seam movement. I can see him and McCullum being quite destructive in the middle order.

Brendan McCullum

Obvious selection. CBF writing about it.

Daniel Vettori

Same as above

Kyle Mills

The Auckland swing bowler has improved beyond all recognition in both forms over the past 2 years. He will take the new ball with Bond

Shane Bond

Best seamer we've had for a long time. Simple.

Michael Mason

Many will be surprised to se him ahead of Gillespie. I have a gut feeling he will turn out decent in tests and in the WC, apart from one game against Canada, bowled well. More accurate than Gillespie, he will be my third seamer.

Lou Vincent shouldn't be in the NZ team in either form. His best claim is probably as a pinch-hitting opener/slogger in ODIs but I'd rather we didn't resort to such novelty tactics.
Haha, Lou Vincent is sooooooo the Andrew Symonds to your Rob Cribb. :p

Anyone else furious that pretty much everyone but us is playing cricket? WI aren't playing anyone AFAIK, why didn't we organise a series with them before we take on SA? SA will be matchfit while we will have to get into our rythym whilst trying to beat one of the best test sides in the world.
It'd only mean you guys were burnt-out even more than everyone always is.

Seriously, you can't win. There's too much cricket - pretty much everyone says that - but when you're not playing you complain "we're not playing". There ain't no win.

New Zealanders can never complain of too much Cricket. They have one of the lighter schedules going around..

What about Sinclair? I thought he was supposed to be a Test player rather than a OD player. So why Vincent ahead of him? Am I missing something?

Well that shouldn't be too much of an issue. In the 90's they had some strong personalities to contend with. Cairns, Parore, Nash, Twose, Doull etc It all comes down to man management skills which frakly, Bracwell doesn't have much of. True, he isnt as bad as Turner was (Seeing as there hasn't been a player rebellion yet) but if you have a management team with good player relations e.g. Rixon and Graham in the late 90's then everything should run smoothly.

It just seems if anyone says one of Sinclairs flaws people jump to defend him like he is some kinda god. Yeah he has been treated badly but I'd rather Vincent/Fulton/Taylor ahead of him. If the players don't like someone like Sinclair then it's bad for them.

Rather select someone who they like more (unless they suck the dogs bollocks)

It must be very difficult on long tours being with the same group of people all the time. Nothing wrong with having some time out from the others. Everyone is different - and thank goodness for that.

Never could understand why Bracewell liked H Marshall so much compared to Vincent and Sinclair.

Not Terrible
Fulton's chance to establish himself postponed while stop-gap Vincent returns. Devastatingly lame imo.
Agreed mostly bit harsh on Vincent who I feel has changed his role for the team lately, but I would have much rathered Fulton TBH. Few other players I'd trade to bring Vincent in though.

Vincent has never had a "role" in tests though, he hasn't played one for ages
I meant in the team as in ODI's, I'd like to see if he brings it into tests. Aggressive middle order batsman and a very sharp run out expert, hope he gets a game but won't be disappointed if he doesn't.

ODIs he's an aggressive OPENING batsman, slogging away merrily (and missing a lot more than hitting) with the field up

Skills not readily transferrable to facing good test attacks imo
