Now we see a lot of teams around the world picking up 19 year old's and 20 year old's and pushing them into international cricket, but Australia hardly seems to pick young players anymore, Michael clarke was the last young player they picked at the age of 22.
Now should Australia pick young players especially for their odi team or should they stick with their policy of grooming a player at the domestic level until he gets ready for international cricket and then picking him.

Pick your best team. Simple that. 19 year olds typically aren't part of that, especially in a team like Australia where players picked have generally performed well.

Well I'm sure Watson is mightily offended that such an esteemed judge as yourself thinks he's a joke. No, it's not like he has the potential to be a world-class all-rounder for the best team in the world. That would be a joke. I mean c'mon, they obviously just pick him because he's buff and has blonde hair, what other reason would there be? He's got virtually no cricketing talent at all, an average of 49 in First Class cricket? Pathetic.

I think this will change in regards to one player; Phil Hughes.

He's been scoring a mountain of runs lately, only a matter of time before he gets into the spotlight I reckon. Moey and him are our "next big things".

Watson is 26 now and he has been around the Australian team since 02, and in the last 5 years he had to do deal with a lot of different types of injuries, due to this he hasn't been able to establish himself in the Australian team.
As for Chappelli he says a lot of things about Watson and more or less he dishes out harsh comments about Watto. But yeah i would be also advise Watto to prove his fitness first by playing in a few domestic games and not rush back from the injury.

As I see it, it would take a pretty special young talent to force there way into a cemented place in the Australian line up, and these kind of players do not come along very often. With young players you are naturally going to experience inconsistency, as they will come across a number of factors they will not experienced before.
What does help, imo, is that Australia can afford the luxury of experimenting with a young player and he is coming into a winning environment, so the pressure is not nearly as intense as say in England.
When England pick youngsters they will have been heralded the next Flintoff, or the next Botham, or equally as flattering comparisons by the press. And these players are seen as saviours almost to the English side, if we are enduring a rough trot. It is such an advanatage to be able to introduce youngsters to that successful environment where winning has become a habit. But as has been said in previous posts, they must deserve their place ahead of some pretty good players.

Something for a few laughs- if Shane Watson was Indian, he'd be banished for a year or so after one match and there would be outrage among Indian fans, and ridicule among others who have seen him.

I don't rate Hughes as highly as others. I played quite a bit against him and Cooper and IMO Cooper was the better batsman by quite away. But Hughes has scored mountains of runs in every level he has played and has never taken long to adapt to that next step.

Jaques is my tip to replace Langer. But by the time Hayden retires, I think Hughes will be the replacement, it is a big call, but he has been earmarked for a long time.

I also think one of my top cricket stories will be telling my kids how my wrongun used to get him every time we played North Coast.

i think age 22 or 23 is a good age for the players to be selected for international side.. i mean 18 or 19 is the age when these cricketers needs to go to school and educate themselves....they may make cricket thier career but cricket won't stay as a career with them untill the end of thier lives.... after age 36 or 37 they are retired from cricket and the only thing that would remain with them is the eduaction...

I wasn't calling his opinion pathetic, I was calling Watson's batting average of 49 pathetic. I wouldn't say my opinion is better, but I think it's widely regarded that Watson is a very good player who has the potential to be a world-class all-rounder, he's just been very unfortunate with injuries so far in his career.

I did probably go a little too far with my sarcasm and deriding bond21's opinion, but I disliked how he called Watson a joke (I'm not a huge Watson fan either BTW), especially when it's obvious he has the potential. Saying "he bats a bit, bowls a lot and I've rarely seen him taking wickets" is a load of crap really, considering his batting average of 49 in First Class cricket and obviously this poster hasn't seen him bowl much, as he takes wickets on a regular enough basis.

I'm sorry if I got to you, and we've had a bit of a run-in with each other in the past about my posting style, but I felt one stupid comment required a stupid answer.

He's well entitled to his opinion, but if he wishes to be a productive member of the forum he should be prepared to present it in a nicer way, instead of slagging off Watson. This isn't a question of whether or not I think bond21 is worthy of debating with, but was a response to the way he put his point across. Like andy said, if a comment like mine doesn't make you very comfortable, it's not my fault and you need to think about relaxing a bit more.
