Tour Down Under
Stage 1
Our 8-man team - identical to the Down Under Classic; largely built around the sprinters, but
Dwyer, Malone and
Forner will be given free reins in the hills.
Chris Dwyer showing off the Aussie colours
The start list included seven ProTour teams, though neither McEwen nor O'Grady graced the race with their presence. The largest names include Milram's Alessandro Petacchi and Erik Zabel, CSC's Luke Roberts and Christian Vandevelde, Unibet's José Rujano, Predictor-Lotto's ageing sprinter Tom Steels, time triallist Dominique Cornu and general strong man Christophe Brandt, and AG2R's line-up which features Jean-Patrick Nazon, Sylvain Calzati and local hero Simon Gerrans.
Early climbs meant a chased-down breakaway was inevitable, the main aim for Casson Dairy to chase down said breakaway and bring the sprinters into a good position.
The 6 that got away were moderately strong, including Russian champion Aleksandr Khatuntsev of Unibet and Andy Flickinger from Bougyues Telecom; however, despite Khatuntsev piling on the pressure and gradually decimating the breakaway, they were caught with 20 km to the finish.
The sprint was chaotic, with Barloworld and Agritubel leading out but no one really taking charge.
Ryan Dunn looked good with a mile to the finish, but once again Docker jumped from his wheel and...
...the Melbourne boy is unbeatable
In the wheel of Ryan Dunn, Italian sprinting legend Alessandro Petacchi. There's hope yet.
