Our out-of-form sprinters struggled with this tiny climb, which was ascended 6 times. They couldn't get to the front, and in order to win we attempted an attack with Forner, as seen below.

Ritchie Boulevard, Geelong, Criterium 64 km
A 7-man group including Guerini TMO and Van Huffel PRL went loose, and after ten km Nicki Sørensen attempted to join them, resulting in a chase being set up by Casson Dairy and Rabobank, who wanted to protect their yellow jersey men. The group was caught with 27 km to go, and the remainder of the race was run at high pace. Casson Dairy attempted a replay of their successful lead out, but after Forner and Reddlapalli had led with 10 km to spare, Malone struggled to keep a high enough pace, Dunn needed to jump wheels, but didn't have enough in the legs to catch up with the trains on the side. Thus, a disappointing sixth place.

14 laps, with such a hill that Dunn and Kearsley were immediately counted out and the aim was just to get them over the line. The stage also finishes with the climb, 4-5 % of about 600 metres.
Thus, Mat's advice was obeyed, and Malone got loose on his second attack attempt, along with seven others including Guerini from TMO and Kilun from Health Net (HNM). Later, 4 more joined the group, and a third attack was launched from the bunch with 38km to go. Relaying this news to Malone, a decision was made to attack the lead group, which made for a higher pace and a smaller group but wore out Malone's strengths. With three laps (15km) to go, they still held a lead of over two minutes, and it was clear that it would be among the six men remaining in the group.
The fight was close; Malone got loose on the penultimate climb, but wasn't good enough to hold on the chasers on the flat. During the final hill sprint he couldn't repeat the trick, and had to see McLachlan from the peloton pass him at the line, as well as finishing behind three of his breakaway mates; Roman Kilun of Health Net was strong enough to win, however.

Point of Order.... what does GC stand for?? 
I'm a bit confused by the results as well... The narration suggests there's been a breakaway and half-a-dozen people crossed the line at the same time, but the actual results show 50+ people at the same time..... in every stage so far. One successful breakaway could win this for anyone by the looks of it!

Yeah, I think I mentioned that the pack caught up with the breakaway and one of the guys from the pack (McLachlan) beat Bugs to the finish on the last stage.
Anyway...might as well finish this race off today:

Docklands, Criterium 21 km
The plan was to control the stage and give our sprinters a good leadout - however, we simply weren't in form to do so. Aerts, Kobzarenko and Eltink attempted to jump from the field, but failed, and in the sprint we were rather anonymous as we backed our own leadout.

Comments: Sprints weren't too good, largely a result of too much faith in our leadouts as well as significant troubles with recovery due to low form. The breakaways didn't quite get pulled off either, so overall a bit disappointing. Still, the only thing we lost was prestige and money, and this is a tiny race that will be forgotten soon.
Onwards to Ballarat, as the next week will be occupied by the Australian national Championships. The favourites include Reddlapalli and Gelman for the individual time trial (ITT) and Malone and Forner for the road race (RR).

Also if one group all finishes together then they all get the same time for the stage. So with it basically just being bunch sprints, everyone's been getting the same time for each stage. The winners end up slightly ahead because if you finish a stage in the top 3 you pick up some time bonuses that count for the overall standings.Point of Order.... what does GC stand for??

There's a bit more to cycling than Heath had an appreciation for. Heath better not get psychologically bashed into submission in Wellington. The home town crowds should buoy me on to success!
I thought that was a decent result for a new team though. Fifth and Sixth for Dunn and Kearsley isn't bad!
